Should you cover a glued wound? ›

A dressing is optional over the wound. If you apply a dressing, use only a DRY gauze dressing. Change the gauze daily or if it gets wet. DO NOT put antibiotic ointment on the wound, as ointment may weaken the glue.

The glue may take up to three weeks to completely fall off your child's wound. Do not use creams or ointments over the glue or near the adhesive tape. This may cause the glue to soften and come off.

Do not put any kind of ointment, cream, or lotion over the area. This can make the adhesive fall off too soon. After the first 24 to 48 hours, wash around the cut with clean water 2 times a day. Do not use hydrogen peroxide or alcohol, which can slow healing.

For cosmetic purposes or to protect from prolonged sunlight, you may cover your site with a band aid or non-stick dressing and tape, but do not apply anything to the site such as topical antibiotics, lotions, creams, or make up. Oils will cause the skin adhesive to come off prematurely.

Covering the wound maintains the natural moisture that helps keep cells alive. An exposed cut will pick up dirt and debris from the air. A wound that heals in a moist environment is less likely to leave a scar. An uncovered wound is more likely to be painful.
