CLEANING VINTAGE CLOTHING

As a general rule of thumb, if it looks very delicate and is an antique, do not attempt wash it. This is applicable to antique garments in silk, crepe, satin or features ornamentation such as beading and embroidery. The best thing to do is spot wash it and air out the garment.

Vinegar. Vinegar can whiten clothes, soften fabric, and help remove musty/mildewy smells. It is 100% biodegradable, making it an eco-friendly alternative to bleach. During the last rinse cycle, pour 1/4 cup of distilled white vinegar into an already-running machine.

Crepe fabric made from silk or wool costs significantly more than synthetic crepe fabric. You can purchase this type of fabric either in yarn or bolt form, and additional charges will be applied to fabric that is dyed or treated with fire retardants or other substances.

While it is entirely possible to machine wash silk, it isn't recommended. Being such a delicate fabric, silk doesn't tend to get along well with the constant turning motion of the machine drum. Silk should be handled with care, and throwing it in a washing machine can often be a little too rough.

Cotton crepes can be easily cleaned at home, with a gentle wash and quick removal after drying. Check your garment's care label for specific instructions.

Most crepe-backed satin will need to be hand-washed or dry-cleaned, to retain the luster of the fabric.

Place a stack of cooked, cooled crepes (between layers of wax paper or paper towels) inside a heavy-duty zip-top plastic bag. Refrigerate up to five days, or freeze up to two months. If frozen, thaw in the refrigerator. Remove stack from the bag, and reheat in a microwave at HIGH for 15 seconds.
