1) Ash owes Brock/Misty a lot of money... he's been using the salary they probably get as Gym Leaders to pay everything.

2) Remember the Primeape he had? Well, maybe the guy who took it is getting prizefights for Primeape, and Ash gets a cut. I'm sure Primeape can get some decent $$$ seeing as Tyson can get 7 million for fighting a Danish guy who makes Glass Joe look like Ali.

3) He sells Pikachu's electricity to Pokemon Centers.

(24)Ash & Co. usually get lots of handouts. You know how they sleep outside in sleeping bags. Walk from town to town. The Pokémon Center might feed them and they heal your Pokémon for free. Pokéballs do cost money though, Jessie said they did in the episode where all the Magikarp became Gyarados and that's why they used nets.

Ash doesn't use many Pokéballs really. So, he doesn't have to worry too much. He is usually low on cash, if he has any at all. Pokémon League (didn't have any $$$ for the all you can eat buffet, but since he was in the league it was free)

We probably would have seen him getting money from trainers if that was true. The anime and the game are very, very different.
