It is quite hard to become a CBP officer. The process involves multiple steps and is very lengthy.
To become a customs and border patrol officer you must first apply. If you make it past this step, you are then required to take a two-part entrance exam. Part one is online. Part two is in person and tests your logic skills, arithmetic reasoning, writing, and work style. Passing to the next steps involves verifying your qualifications and submitting to a background check.
Once you have completed the previous steps you are then put through a physical exam. This is followed by a fitness test that has minimum requirements. These minimum requirements are 20 sit-ups in a minute, 12 push-ups in a minute, and a 12" step test of 120 steps a minute for five minutes. Should you make it this far, you are then put through an interview, a polygraph test, and a drug test.
There is currently a shortage of CBP officers. CPB Officer jobs are generally located near borders with other countries, coastal waters, ports of entry, and parcel processing facilities. In order, to be a CBP officer, you must be willing to relocate to one of these areas. Given that there is a shortage, I would reason that this is not a job that a lot of people seek to do.
