So, German is the language he knows best because he has completed his education there and spent most of his time in the country. His parents, Irina Zvereva and Alexander Mikhailovich Zverev were both tennis coaches who split the time between Germany and the US, where he picked up English.
Apart from that, his parents were the highest-ranked professional tennis players in the Soviet Union. After their retirement, both of them became tennis coaches, but their Russian backgrounds did come with Zverev and his brother, as they both are quite fluent in Russian.

A few years back, in an interview for the German newspaper Bild, the former world number 2 ranked tennis player talked about how he made his own decision to play for Germany rather than any other country. Along with that, he also dwelled on how he has some Russian in him, but his facts are quite clear.
He said, “I won’t play for any other country. I was born and raised in Germany; I went to school there, and I have German friends. Yes, I have Russian origins, and there’s also something Russian about me. The fact that you don’t give up, that you don’t stop fighting, that’s part of being Russian.”
