In all of the above states even the most basic bread will set you back more than $1. Unsurprisingly, expensive Hawaii will cost you the much. A loaf of bread in paradise comes in at $3.24, over 3x that of the cheaper states.
Where Bread Is Cheapest
Here are the states where it takes the least cash to buy a loaf of bread. All are below .88 cents. New Jersey came in cheapest at a surprisingly low .67 cents.
How We Determined This — And What It Means
The data featured in the article comes from Walmart’s online shopping platform.
We used the price of a “Great Value White Round Top Bread Loaf, 20 oz, 22 Count” (one of the most common (and cheapest!) available breads) at a Walmart located in each state’s capital. With the exception of Alaska, who’s capital Juneau has no Wal-Mart, so Anchorage was used instead.
The table below provides complete data on the cost of one loaf of bread in each of the states.
Since Wal-Mart often offers cheaper prices than gas stations, convenience stores, and premium chains, this price may not reflect the price you see at the cash register.
Similarly, a Wal-Mart in or near the capital city was chosen– since more densely populated areas often have higher prices, a shopper in a rural city may see a lower sticker price.
Ultimately, this is not a good dataset for determining personal expenses. After all, you know very well how much a loaf of bread costs you. For that matter, you may not eat white bread at all, preferring a wheat or other type of bread.
In general, bread remains one of the cheaper staples to purchase- and far less volatile than milk or eggs.
It also overall a cheap lunch filler. That .88 cent loaf of walmart bread has 22 slices, or enough bread for 11 sandwiches if you’re willing to eat the end pieces. Toss some PBJ on that or bologna and you have a cheap, filling lunch to fuel you on your workday.
