How Much Perfume is Too Much? (2024)

Perfume and aftershave are no longer the luxuries they began as have become essentials that we can’t live without. Whatever the occasion, getting the scent just right can help enhance your aesthetic as well as keeping you feeling and smelling fresh, and a visit to our perfume shop, where you can pick up the biggest and most popular perfumes and aftershaves with huge discounts applied as standard, should be a regular event.

These days, many of us have an everyday favourite as well as a few scents we keep for special occasions. Some people even choose to layer their scents, creating a unique fragrance by using a few squirts from different bottles. Our selection of women’s perfume and men’s aftershave has everything you need, whatever your spraying style.

Application

How you apply your fragrance can make a big difference to how it comes across to others, and learning how to apply perfume correctly, and how to check and correct if you have gone overboard, can save you precious time in a pinch as well as conserving your perfume stash.

Too little will go unnoticed, and too much will attract attention for all the wrong reasons, as well as getting up your own nose – but how many sprays is too many?

We recommend no more than 5, no less than 2 and space them out (wrists, neck and body) to make the scent even. This depends on the intensity of the fragrance you are using, and obviously these rules can be bent if you are combining perfumes. This also only really applies to your initial spray. You may want to top up later, and you should always aim to use a little less on these occasions.

Phone a Friend

If you’ve had a spray and you want to check yourself, the easiest way is to ask a friend to stand about 3 feet away and ask if they can smell your scent. If they can, at that distance it should be very light and faint. If you don’t have anyone available to help, there are still ways you can tell if you have over or underdone it.

First of all, can you smell your scent strongly when you are stood or sat still? That’s a sign you may have had 1 squirt too many. If this is the case, washing the sprayed areas with warm water and a little soap will give you a clean slate. If the perfume is on your clothes (which we do not recommend) you may need to get changed.

Final Answer

A good way to check if you are a regular over-sprayer is to use your regular amount of perfume, wait for 5-7 seconds and dab the area with a tissue. If it sticks or tears, there’s a good chance you have too much on and need to fix it. If you don’t have access to warm water, wet wipes can go some way to removing excess scent.

Under spraying is much easier to fix, and an extra squirt will see you on your way.

Once you have your spray routine nailed, you can be confident that the scent you want is what others are smelling.
