The eyebrows get lighter, the eyelids droop. The lips become thinner. For women over 50, makeup can be a great way to enhance the features. Choosing and applying foundation after 50
As we age, our skin becomes thinner and drier. To achieve a healthy, glowing look, women over 50 are strongly advised to adopt a healthy lifestyle... and to avoid using heavy, matte, high-coverage foundationsthat hide skin's natural colour and brightness. Instead, opt for a light, moisturizing product that won't build up in wrinkles and fine lines.
Tips from the pros!
- Moisturize your face and neck. Apply the cream to clean, slightly damp skin.
- Prepare your face for makeup by using a primer. A primer smooths the skin, shrinks pores and diminishes blemishes.
- Apply a little concealer or under-eye corrector only to problem areas (dark circles, redness, dark spots, etc.). Avoid stick formulas that can clump. Instead, opt for products that are more liquid and easier to use with your fingertips.
- Even out your face colour with a very light layer of foundation. But easy does it. You definitely don't want to look like you're wearing a mask!
- Set makeup with a light pink loose powder. Use it sparingly. Too much powder can lodge in wrinkles and make them look worse.
- Apply a small amount of pinkish powder blush to the side of the cheekbone and up to the temple. This provides a shaping and lifting effect. Forget about bronzing powders, which can give an orange tint or an earthy look to the skin. When you’re over 50, the face needs brightness—that’s all!

Touching up your eyebrows when you’re over 50
After a lot of harsh treatment over the years, eyebrowscan often look bushy or sparse once you’re over 50. To remedy the situation, get out your tweezers, a tapered shadow brush and eyebrow powder. Now you’re all set to redefine your look!
You can also use an eyebrow pencil to draw in hair where there is less or none. Powder, however, provides a softer, more natural look. It also holds up very well on the skin.
Applying eye makeup when you’re over 50
The eyelids tend to sag over time. This is normal. Your goal is to make your eyes look bigger and brighter by using light, neutral eyeshadow shades (beige, taupe, etc.).
Avoid using bright colours and iridescent shadowsover the entire eyelid. A smoky look isn’t recommended either, as it weighs down the eyes.
Tips from the pros!
- Apply a light-coloured eyeshadow on the inner part of the eyelid. Gently bring the colour out, away from the nose.
- Apply the same light shade under the brow bone. This will brighten up the eyes!
- Use a darker colour to define the eye. Start from the centre of the lid. Again, bring the colour outward, away from the nose. Blend any lines with a brush.
- Draw a light line of bold pencil (brown, plum or gray) along the upper lash line. Blend the pencil with a brush and a little powder. The powder will set the eyeliner and soften the look.
- Apply a coat of lengthening mascarato the upper lashes. You can also use a formula that adds volume, just be careful to avoid clumping the lashes.
Good to know!
When you’re over 50, it is not recommended to use eye shadow, pencil or mascara on the lower part of the eye. This accentuates dark circles and puffiness and “shrinks” the eyes.
Choosing and applying lipstick when you’re over 50
As lips tend to become thinner with age, it’s best to opt for a satiny moisturizing product that makes the lips appear fuller. Time to toss those dark, matte lipsticks (burgundy, plum, brown, burgundy)! Anyhow, they make your teeth look yellow. And who wants that?
Tips from the pros!
- Use a soft, creamy lip pencil around the lips. Go a little bit beyond the natural line to create a slight pout. Blend the line towards the inside of the lips with a brush. Make sure to use the same colour pencil as your lipstick.
- Apply lipstick. Be careful not to go over the corners.
- Put a touch of gloss in the centre of the lower lip. This spot of light gives the mouth some volume.
Good to know!
Lip liner prevents lipstick from leaking into lines and wrinkles. It is absolutely essential when you’re over 50!
