The skills and knowledge you learn in preparation for your State Board of Cosmetology exam don’t disappear once you pass the exam. 1. Improper disinfection of non-electrical equipment

Tips: Clean your equipment using an EPA-approved disinfectant. Keep disinfected items in an area that’s clean and covered, and all dirty items in a receptacle that’s labeled “dirty.”

2. Improper storage of liquids, creams, powders, and cosmetics

Tips: Store all items in clean and closed containers. Label all bottles and containers with their contents.

3. Incorrect disposal of non-disinfected items

Tips: Immediately dispose of items that can’t be disinfected, such as buffers, sponges, and wax sticks.

4. Unlicensed establishment, employee, or independent contractor

Tips: Always keep your personal license current. Be sure the establishment you work for holds a current license.

5. Improper display of license

Tips: Your license needs to be posted at your work station. An establishment’s license must be posted in the reception area.

6. Incorrect cleaning and/or storage of towels

Tips: Towels must be cleaned in water at least 140 degrees, for no less than 15 minutes. Clean towels must be stored in closed cabinets.

7. Establishment is not clean or is in disrepair

Tips: Keep all floors, walls, woodwork, ceilings, furnishings, and fixtures clean and in good repair.

8. Equipment is not fully immersed in disinfectant during cleaning

Tips: There must be enough disinfectant solution in the container to allow the tools and instruments to be completely covered.

9. Unsanitary brushes

Tips: Keep all brushes maintained and in clean condition.

10. Unsanitary treatment tables or headrests
