Your iron needs cleaning when any of the following occur: The iron leaves chalky white deposits (limescale) on your clothes. The iron leaves marks and stains on the fabric. There is a sticky layer of gunk on the soleplate.
Over time and with each use, the soleplate of your iron, i.e. the heated coating that comes into direct contact with the fabric, may become dirty. Deposits accumulated in the iron's cells may stain the fabric when ironing.
If you scorch an item while ironing it, there are two fast and easy ways to repair the damage. The trick is to do one of them immediately. A) If you have time, rub liquid laundry detergent into the scorch mark and launder the item right away, using liquid laundry detergent and oxygen bleach, if safe for the fabric.
In order to minimise the creases you create throughout the day, iron your clothes inside-out, and along the seam lines. It also helps if you set the iron to the exact heat setting required on the clothing label. This is self-explanatory. Spray your clothes with an anti-wrinkle spray before you wear them out.
But ironing can also cause a shine, when you use too high a heat setting. A commercial scorch-removal product can eliminate this type of shine. Or dampen a white cloth with 3 percent hydrogen peroxide (a mild bleaching agent), and gently rub the shiny area before laundering.
The two main causes of why clothes stay crinkly after ironing include the following: The clothing is so badly wrinkled that normal ironing cannot smooth the fabric. Incorrect technique can iron creases into the clothing.
If you can't treat a scorched cotton shirt right away, submerge it in cold water immediately, and let stand 24 hours. The cold water may make the scorched areas disappear. Remove a scorch mark by ironing it again, this time with a piece of clean fabric that's been dipped in hydrogen peroxide.
