Get thebust right
When the bust (chest area) of a blazer doesn’t fit right, it’s one of the more obvious things you will notice because itwon’t look flattering.
My general tip is, if you have larger breasts, go for either an open front blazer or one that has a deep neckline andnips in at the waist. I love open-front blazers because I find them versatile for most bodies. They’re especially nice for women with bigger chests because of the way the lapels naturally fall over your curves without constricting you. Avoid overly structured shoulders or thick fabrics– and avoid adding bulkon top.
Forthosewith a smaller chest, big lapels balance out really nicely. While double-breasted blazers can feel cumbersome for lots of women, it’s great on smaller petite frames! Just don’t go overboard on the oversized look because your figurecan easily get lost in it!
Pay attention to the shoulders
This is a very important fit to get right! You definitely won’t like wearing blazers that are too tight in the shoulders – or that puff out too much.
If you have broad shoulders, go for blazers that are less structured in the shoulders, or one without a collar. If you have smaller or narrower shoulders, but larger hips, try a more structured piece – or even shoulder pads that will complement your body shape.
You want the fit of the shoulders to be fitted but not too tight. Be sure to test out your range of motion when you try them on!
Play on your hips
If you are blessed withcurvy hips, look for blazers that are more structured up top, gather at the waist and perhaps fan out a bit towards the bottom. The structure at the top in the shoulders will complement your hip width and create an hourglass silhouette.
If you have an hourglass figure with curves and a small waist, accentuatethat feature with a fitted blazer that buttons at your midsection.
Find the perfect length
A general rule of thumb is: If you’re tall, don’t wear a blazer that is too short, and if you are short, avoid ones that are too long. Shorter people actually look great in mid to short length blazers and high waisted pants, because it makes their legs look longer and body more balanced. Tall people definitely have a lot more freedom in terms of length, however, a short blazer might make your body seem a bit disproportionate.
Of course there are no hard rules. I love longer blazers that fall slightly below the hips if I’m wearing a tapered or skinny trousers. They also look great belted over a dress or skirt. It’s all about making sure your proportions feel in sync.
