How to Dress Femininely in Winter - curly girl life (2024)

Hello lovelies! As I type these words, I’m looking out the window at 6 inches of gleaming, white snow. It’s *officially* winter here in Cape Breton. To be honest, it’s not always easy to dress femininely in the winter. In the warmer months, you can just throw on a simple dress, cute shoes, and be ready to go! But, with a little time and effort, your winter looks can be just as adorable. This post has been largely inspired by other resources, including a Youtube video, on how to dress femininely in winter.

1. Wear feminine accessories.

In vintage days, a lady would never go out in public without a hat, gloves, purse, and possibly even a scarf. However, in our casual culture, these accessories have often fallen by the wayside.

To dress femininely in winter, I recommend adding a few feminine accessories to your wardrobe. For example, my mom purchased a pair of adorable black knit gloves with leopard trim for me, and I love wearing them. They keep my hands toasty, and they look cute with just about any outfit!

Just one or two accessories will add that je ne sais quoi to your outfit. For example, you can wear:

  • fur-lined (or leather) driving gloves
  • a print scarf
  • fur ear-muffs
  • vintage-inspired sunglasses
  • a black or tan felt hat
  • a chic beret

You can find these accessories on Amazon, a department store, or even your local thrift store! Keep an eye out for vintage pieces (especially scarves) as they are usually good quality and one of a kind.

2. Choose lighter and brighter colours.

In the colder months, we tend to gravitate toward dark colours…black, navy, and dark grey. These colours are fine, but they are not always the most feminine choice. Depending on your color season, try to choose lighter and brighter colours for a more feminine look.

For example, some girls look fantastic in pastels such as light pink, baby blue, and lilac. If you’re one of them, don’t put away those colours in the winter. Instead, choose warmer pieces like turtlenecks and A-line skirts in those same shades.

If you look best in bold colours (like me), wear shades of royal blue, yellow, cherry red, and more! Include some pop colours in your wardrobe to brighten up your winter looks. You can include these colours either in clothes OR in accessories (such as scarves and belts).

To dress femininely in winter, choose light and bright colours.

3. Focus on a ladylike silhouette.

The great temptation of winter is to wear cozy, shapeless clothes, top them off with a puffer coat, and look like a large, friendly marshmallow.

Resist. The. Temptation.

Instead, choose tailored clothes that will be warm and preserve a feminine silhouette. Invest in a flattering winter coat that defines the waist. If you live in a northern climate like me, look for an insulated coat that gathers at the waist. If your climate is warmer, you may be able to manage with a long wool coat with a self-belt. Avoid anything that reminds you of the Michelin Man!

Here are some examples of flattering clothes to wear in winter:

  • Fitted sweaters
  • A-line skirts (a few inches past the knee is a flattering length)
  • Skater skirts
  • Wide belts
  • Long cardigans over thinner tops
  • Trench coats with self-belts
  • Pencil skirts
  • Tailored blazers
  • Dresses with a defined waist

With these clothes, you’ll be well on your way to looking ladylike in the winter!

4. Do your face.

To be honest, few of us wake up in the morning looking glamorous. It takes a little effort to look presentable and put together. But let me assure you that it is worth it!

When you take a few minutes to do your makeup, you’ll feel more confident. And other people will respect you more. Most importantly, it will help you be a good ambassador for Christ.

Here are a few of my favourite tips for makeup:

  • Wear a bright lip colour. It will brighten up your whole face!
  • Always apply mascara to the back of your lashes first, then the front. Wiggle the wand through the lashes to coat them thoroughly.
  • For eyeliner, try lining your eyes with a dark brown eyeshadow and an eyeliner brush for a softer look.
  • Always wear blush in the winter (especially if you’re fair like me!)
  • Fill in your eyebrows with an eyebrow product OR with a matte eyeshadow and an eyeliner brush.

Doing your makeup every day will definitely help you feel more feminine this winter!

6. Play up your best features.

Let’s be honest, ladies. Most of us have some physical features that we like, and others that we aren’t as happy with. Learn to play up your best features and don’t worry about the rest!

If you have a tiny waist, wear skirts and dresses with a fitted waist. Wide belts will look amazing on you, too!

If you have great curves, wear a fit and flare dress with heels.

If you have long legs, wear dressy boots and fabulous heels.

If you have fantastic arms, wear fitted sweaters and cardigans.

For more information, you can research tips for dressing your body type. The clothes that look amazing on you won’t necessarily look amazing on me, and that’s okay! Focus on what looks best on YOU, not on your girlfriends.
