How to dress for a job interview (and get it) (2024)

Job interviews are hard. Difficult questions and too much seriousness. The last thing you want to be worrying about is whether or not you’ve dressed correctly for it. But, a good fit can actually send you over the finish line. Wearing the right outfit is as beneficial as saying the correct things. It'll also help to make you look confident (even if you don't feel it), and keep those nerves at

But where do you start? First things first you need to take into account what kind of job you're going for. Dress codes might be a little looser these days (you probably already know this if you have an office job), but when it comes to impressing a potential employee, you want to get it right. The first thing to do is take into account the sort of job that you're vying for.

Scope out the office dress code

If you’re really unsure about whether or not you should wear a suit, a wise idea is to hang out near the office you're trying to make your nine-to-five home. Check out the employees. Clock their fits. Copy them – and do it better. Make it easy for your interviewer to be able to picture you doing the job.

When should you wear a suit?

If you’re hoping to score employment in one of the City Of London's big banks, a government position or even a school, then a suit is likely going to be the optimal choice. And while buying a suit might seem like a big stretch budget-wise, we can reassure you that there are plenty of options out there that won't leave you penniless before you even start the big job.

From Arket to H&M, everywhere is doing suits that actually fit well these days. And if you've got the budget, then we'd recommend forking out. A good suit is never a bad idea, especially if you're heading to a job that also requires you to wear one. But we'd recommend you keep things minimal - a simple black suit is always a win, as is a grey. Navy is a little softer, but equally as sharp as those aforementioned colours. Also, a slim fit will do the job. Nothing too fashion and wide on the leg. A crisp white shirt is always a winner, while gold cufflinks are appropriate for a boardroom pow-wow or big presentation.

When is a tie essential?

When it comes to a tie, the choice really is yours. If you're interviewing for a job at a big bank, then we recommend knotting up.

But if you're heading to the Headmaster's office or for another role that might require you to suit up, then we reckon you'll be able to get away with going tie-less. Kneck ties look good, but they can feel pretty stuffy, especially in hot weather, so if you can go without then we would suggest you do. Shoe-wise, stick to a classic pair of Derbies – black and scuff-free. If a suits a vibe, then ensure that it's pressed and free of crinkles. You don't want to look like you've just rolled out of bed and thrown it on.

When do you not need a suit?

If you’re going after a job in a creative industry (for example, a graphic designer or fashion journalist position), then the rules are a little more relaxed. A slim-fit suit paired with a T-shirt instead of a shirt should do the trick. Otherwise, just go for a slick two-piece (in a neutral hue) from APC or YMC.

Can you wear jeans?

Sure, some jobs won't require a formal day-to-day uniform, but we're quick to advise that jeans are an absolute no-no when it comes to a job interview. Denim, as a rule of thumb, should really be avoided.

Get your skincare down

Appearances do matter when it comes to a job interview. A mattifying moisturiser is a win. French brand Horace does an excellent, super lightweight one. It'll calm rosy cheeks and easily banish that sweaty shine. And sure, you might not be used to wearing make-up, but in this instance, it could be the deciding factor between getting a job and not. Your chances of waking up with a breakout – thanks to stress and nerves – are high, and we recommend dabbing on a little concealer. Givenchy’s Mister Instant Corrective Pen will hide your blemishes, as well as tired under eyes.

Sort your hair out

A good haircut is a must. And you also want to ensure you've got those flyaways on lock. Keep your hair neat, using a grooming lotion to keep them down (Kiehl’s does an excellent one).

And finally, splash on a subtle fragrance

You don’t want to dab on anything too intense, as it could make you seem a little try-hard – plus, not everyone has the same taste in scents. So avoid any fragrances with an oud base and go for something with fresh, calm notes. Something tasteful, like the light stuff Tom Ford is putting out there.
