Who doesn’t love a bit (or a lot) of glitter. I know I do and it’s one of my favourite things to craft with especially at Christmas time. There is nothing worse however than picking a glittery item up and then you’re covered in it for days! Shaun especially really hates it at Christmas time when glittered ornaments get their glitter all over the place. That’s why I wanted to write this quick post on how to seal glitter using Mod Podge.

You might think this technique is pretty easy and it is. But when I was looking myself online to find out how to seal glitter there were so many different tutorials and none of them clear. Some even just said “seal the glitter” without even telling me what to use. What I was looking for specifically was someone to tell me what I could use to seal glitter without it’s sparkle being diminished. I decided to give Mod Podge a try and I was so happy with the results.
So I started off with my glitter, the item I wanted to cover, a paint brush and Mod Podge Gloss. You need to make sure you have the gloss version not the matte! Paint the item you want to cover in a thin, even coat of Mod Podge and shake over your glitter until the item is covered. Leave this to dry completely.
Once the Mod Podge is dry your item will look great but as you can see from the picture above as soon as you pick it up glitter gets transferred to your hands and then everywhere else too.
Once dry your glitter will be completely sealed, and it doesn’t diminish the glitteryness (that is a word, I just made it!) at all as you can see from the pictures above. This cute cactus was a gift from a friend who saw it and knew I could do something with it for Noa’s room. I want to do a little gallery wall and this will be part of it.
Have you ever covered anything in glitter? I hope this post will help with any future glitter projects you might have 🙂 .

Apply a top layer of Mod Podge to seal in the glitter.
Once the first layer is dry to the touch, use your sponge or paint brush to add another thin layer of Mod Podge to your item. Use long, even strokes to reduce the appearance of brush lines.
The dry time between applications of Mod Podge Mega Glitter is approximately 20–30 minutes, depending upon the thickness of application and the humidity level of the room. Be sure the previous application is thoroughly dry prior to applying the next.
Most brands should suffice for a quick fix. Bear in mind that hair-spray may help affix the glitter in place on the garment, but will not hold up forever. You may need to use fabric glue or a transparent iron-on transfer for a more permanent fix. Remove loose glitter and prepare to spray.
This type of resin creates a gel-like consistency, which helps to hold the glitter in place. So, when choosing your resin, opt for a high-viscosity type to give your glitter the best chance of staying put.
The amount of top coats of any decoupage finish is a personal choice. If your project is decorative only, you can apply one to two coats of finish. Should your project be used other than decorative only, we suggest a third application.
Once applied, it provides a strong, clear seal that protects your work from damage and wear. Whether you're working on a collage, decoupage project, or sealing photographs, Mod Podge Spray ensures that your creations are preserved with a durable finish. The versatility of Mod Podge Spray is impressive.
Here are the two best options I've found after consulting with all of my crafting friends: Mod Podge over the top of the glitter with a formula like Sparkle Mod Podge or Super Gloss.
Most Mod Podge formulas dry completely within hours or overnight, but are not fully cured for 3 – 4 weeks. Curing is when solvents in a product evaporate and a product reaches its maximum strength. Curing is a chemical process. Even craft paint goes through this process, as does wall paint, etc.
What can I use to seal glitter without making it too dull? Use an FDA-approved epoxy, like Alumilite. Mix the epoxy thoroughly, then apply a thin layer over the glitter. Let dry for 24 hours, after which you can apply another thin layer and let dry.
