How to troubleshoot poor or no AM or FM radio reception on the car stereo. (2024)

IMPORTANT: It is recommended that all car stereo installations be performed by a qualified, professional installer.

NOTE: If model-specific information is needed to complete any of these steps, refer to the instructions supplied with the product. Manuals are posted on your model support page.

  1. Try different stations to verify the problem is not limited to just one or two stations. A station having a low-powered transmitter can cause reception problems, as well as a station that is a distance from where you are and the signal loses stamina by the time it reaches you.
  2. Verify the antenna lead is connected to the antenna jack on the rear of the car stereo receiver and that the connection is secure. The antenna lead should not be connected to any other jack.
  3. If applicable, change the tuner settings of the car stereo between the Local/Distant (LX/DX) station selector to switch the tuner sensitivity.
  4. Class D amplifiers may also cause AM reception problems. If you have an amplifier connected, disconnect the amplifier power. If the AM reception now improves, the amplifier is the problem. There is not a fix for this other than lowering the GAIN feature on the amplifier, if applicable.
  5. Try resetting the car stereo.
  6. There could also be a poor ground connection. We would recommend that you contact your local installer to have the ground connection checked.
