How to Use the iPhone for Overseas Charging (2024)

If you want to take your iPhone overseas, you might be concerned about how you'll charge its battery. Many countries use different voltage levels than the United States, and if you plug an electronic device designed for low voltage into a high-voltage outlet, you run the risk of frying it. Fortunately, the iPhone's power adapter was designed for international use, so it can withstand a wide range of voltages. However, consider purchasing a plug adapter, as some wall outlets in foreign countries have different prong designs.

  1. 1.

Obtain the appropriate plug adapter for the country you'll be visiting. The United States uses the Type B outlet. Most of Europe and the Middle East use a Type C plug, while Central America and Asia tend to use Type A, and Africa tends to use Type C or E. Australia uses Type I, and Great Britain uses Type G. You can purchase these adapters -- or a full set -- from most electronics stores, including the Apple Store.

  2. 2.

Push the prongs of the plug adapter into the wall outlet when you want to charge your phone.

  3. 3.

Push the prongs at the end of the iPhone's power cord into the plug adapter. If you're using your computer to charge, plug your computer's power cord into the plug adapter.

  4. 4.

Push the other end of the power cord into the docking port on the bottom of the iPhone.
