1)When it comes to pockets - less is more. The original cargo pants, created by the British in WWII had only one patch pocket. Later the Americans made it two, and in recent years we've seen some brands going absolutely pocket crazy! For a sleek look, keep the pockets to a minimum, look for styles that have pockets closer to the hip side than the knees.

2)The fit and fabric are crucial. Look for styles that have straight or fitted legs, steer clear of baggy, wide legged styles. Pockets should be flat, not sagging, and the fabric should be cotton - either sturdy twill or denim, those in cooler climes can even opt for wool.

3)Don't overcomplicate the look. Double military is an absolute no-no - wearing military jackets or sweaters with lapels, patches, badges will result in you looking like you've raided the nearest army base. Instead, pair your cargo pants with an oversized t-shirt, a knitted sweater, or an overshirt.

4)Keep it casual. There are many different styles out there, but no matter how pricey or tailored they are, cargo pants are not formal wear. They were created as utility wear, and that is how they remain.
