The bias is back!
Like me, you no doubt wore a bias cut dress or skirt in the 90s with Gazelles and maybe lusted after the iconic Ghost slip dress (or maybe you had one??) Well the bias cut is back, it’s been slowly infiltrating the mainstream since SS18 and is set to reach peak trend this year in the form of satin slip skirts (or dresses).
Bias is so-called due to the way the fabric is cut on the diagonal. Whilst this cut works great for rectangular shapes by adding curves, it also works for those already blessed with curves. So don’t be afraid! A bias-cut piece will gently accentuates your lines while floating freely around the body. The key is to wear control underwear! My control pants literally resemble cycling shorts – they are not attractive but they do an absolute fab job of smoothing out lumps and bumps and in this weather add an effective warm under layer!!
This current trend sees the skirt length fall about mid calf, which is great for wearing with ankle boots and kitten heels. As this shape and length offers a narrow silhouette on the lower half, the key to great styling is to contrast with a bulkier top half. So chunky knits, billowy blouses and oversized blazers all work really well with a satin slip skirt.
In the same way, have a play with textures; heavy knits, leather, faux fur, rock tees & chunky boots pair well by contrasting with the luxurious look and feel of satin. Satin skirts are also great if you are putting together a tonal outfit (one of the key trends this year), as the silky sheen of the fabric will provide good differentiation between tones.
