Hungary Revealed As EU's Cheapest Country To Buy Clothes - Hungary Today (1)

Hungary is the European Union’s cheapest member state when it comes to buying clothes but alcohol and cigarettes are also highly affordable by European standards. The Eurostat survey, reflecting 2014 price levels, shows however that food is more expensive in Hungary than in neighbouring countries.

Although clothes were more expensive even in Poland and Bulgaria last year, figures show that food was more affordable in Poland, Romania and Bulgaria in 2014. The combined comparison of European Union member states shows that consumer prices are the lowest in Bulgaria (at 48 per cent of the EU average), followed by Romania, Poland and Hungary (57 per cent). Prices are highest in the Scandinavian countries of Denmark, Sweden and Finland, all above 120 per cent of the community average.

Hungary is the second-cheapest member state when it comes to both restaurant and hotel prices and alcohol and tobacco, with only the much more underdeveloped Bulgaria having lower price standards. Hungarians payed 65 per cent of the EU average for alcohol and tobacco products and 51 per cent of the community averagefor restaurant meals and hotel stays, Eurostat figures reflect.
