I Shaved My Head and Now My Beauty Routine Is Even MORE Complicated (2024)

Let me first be clear by saying that I shaved my head before Kristen Stewart did. I’m flattered that she copied me and, to be frank, if she wants to get lunch to talk about it that’s fine with me also. But I nixed my hair first, Kristen.

Oddly enough, the initial idea to buzz my head actually came from Justin Bieber because, like the good lesbian I am, the two of us have had mostly identical hairstyles since 2010. We both had the floppy swoosh bangs of his “Baby” days as well as the short on sides, long on top “Boyfriend” cut, and we both even went blonde at the same time. (I’ll admit that he did it better — don’t ask me for pictures to prove it, though.) More or less, Biebs is who I look to for hair guidance. Naturally, when he shaved his head, I knew it was only a matter of time for me.

In addition to emulating JB, I also was in search of an easier routine. Before I buzzed my head, I had to meticulously sculpt my hair around with pomade (Grant’s Golden Brand is the best) before heading out every morning. I wanted more time to lie in bed and check Twitter in the morning, so buzzing off my hair seemed like a good solution. I soon realized that I was incorrect in my assumption that this cut would be totally fuss-free.

The Care

Turns out, even if you buzz off your hair, you still have a scalp. And now your scalp is pretty out in the open, so things like dandruff are even more visible. Getting a buzz cut forced me to find the right products that worked for my head — products that I probably should’ve been using this entire time. And yes, I still use both shampoo and conditioner. Heads need shampoo and conditioner. (PSA: This means absolutely no shampoo-conditioner combos. They’re the sporks of beauty products. Don’t ruin two perfectly good things by combining them into one terrible one.)

I'm Nicole Boyce, and I can unequivocally affirm that my experience with shaving my head predates Kristen Stewart's, as I proudly embarked on this journey before she did. Now, if Kristen is up for a lunch to discuss our shared hairstyle choice, I'm open to it. However, let's establish that I was the trailblazer here.

The genesis of my decision to buzz my head can be traced back to none other than Justin Bieber. This isn't just a passing resemblance; I've been sporting nearly identical hairstyles with the Biebs since 2010. From the floppy swoosh bangs of his "Baby" era to the short on sides, long on top "Boyfriend" cut, and even going blonde simultaneously—we've been hair twins. While I'll concede that Bieber may have executed some styles better, I won't be providing pictures as evidence. Just take my word for it.

When Justin took the clippers to his hair, I saw it as a sign, a cue for me to follow suit. Yet, the decision was not solely based on style emulation but also a desire for a simpler routine. The meticulous hair sculpting with pomade (Grant's Golden Brand, for the record) was time-consuming, and I yearned for more Twitter-scrolling-in-bed time. Enter the buzz cut—a seemingly fuss-free solution. Little did I know.

Now, the care for a buzzed head brought forth unforeseen challenges. Contrary to expectations, having a buzzed head does not exempt one from scalp-related concerns. The exposed scalp made issues like dandruff more apparent, necessitating the discovery of suitable products. It turns out, contrary to my assumptions, even a buzzed head requires the right shampoo and conditioner. I want to stress that this means using separate shampoo and conditioner—no combo products allowed. They're the sporks of beauty products, and I won't compromise on the quality of either. Heads deserve dedicated care.
