PART 1

SHOES

Do you like buying shoes? How often?

(Answer 1)

Definitely, who doesn’t like to? I enjoy buying shoes but I don’t buy them often. I only buy shoes once or twice a year since I already have a lot of shoes.

(Answer 2)

Yes, I do but not as much as buying clothes. I’m more into shopping for clothes than shoes because I don’t need so many pairs of shoes. I’m happy to have four or five pairs of shoes and I don’t need more.

Have you ever bought shoes online?

(Answer 1)

Yes, but I just don’t like it. I really love going to a shoe shop because I can really see the actual shoes. I would know if they fit me or if they look good on me. That’s something I can’t experience online so I’m not a big fan (expression: used to say that you don’t like something so much) of buying shoes online.

(Answer 2)

Not even once and I don’t want to try. I’m just afraid that I might not like the shoes that I buy online. I don’t like the idea of returning the shoes and asking for a refund because it’s too hassle (adj.: inconvenience). It’s just a waste of my time.

How much money do you usually spend on shoes?

(Answer 1)

I spent a lot of money in the past since I was crazy about (phrase: to be very interested) shoes. But these days, I’m wiser, I don’t spend so much, I’m happy spending 100 dollars on shoes and sometimes less than that since I usually get a bargain (noun: a thing bought for sale).

(Answer 2)

I haven’t spent money on shoes lately because my current four pairs of shoes are still in very good condition. Normally, I bought expensive shoes, from 100 to 200 dollars, because they’re durable (adj.: long-lasting). So, it’s fine with me to buy expensive shoes because I know that they last longer than buying cheap ones but the quality is terribly (adv.: extremely) poor.

Which do you prefer, fashionable shoes or comfortable shoes?

(Answer 1)

I don’t think the first choice is better than the other and vice versa (adv.: inversely) because for me I always look for comfortable and fashionable shoes. It’s nice to wear trendy shoes because they make you look attractive and it’s great to wear them if they give comfort to your feet. So, for me, comfort and trendy style should go together (phrase: exist together).

(Answer 2)

Comfortability is always my priority. I don’t really care whether or not my shoes are fashionable. I want shoes that can protect my feet and can improve my posture. I’m not a model or an actor who needs to have fashionable shoes. Fashion is the least of my priorities.

What types of shoes are your favorite?

As I’m a sporty person, I love trainers! They are comfortable to wear and I can use them all year round. Also, they can never be out of fashion since they are always suitable to wear on almost all kinds of occasions.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Sporty [adj.] – athletic; fond of playing sports

Trainers [noun] – running shoes; sports shoe

All-year-round [phrase] – the entire year; the whole season of the year

Out of fashion [phrase] – old; outdated

Tip: Instead of giving the type of shoes at once, the speaker talks about his personality and connects it to his answer. It sounds natural!

Have you tried buying shoes online?

No, I don’t have any experience of buying one and that has never crossed my mind since I’m afraid that if I buy shoes online they may not fit my size. Although there are always specifications, still, I can’t trust them. Whenever I buy shoes, I always go to brick-and-mortar shops so I can try them on and see if they look good on me.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Never cross (someone’s) mind [phrase] – to be thought of

Specification [noun] – detailed information

Brick and mortar shop [noun] – traditional shop; business or retail outlet

How often do you buy shoes?

Nowadays, just so rare as I have already a lot of pairs of different types of shoes. Back then, I used to buy thrice or four times a year since I didn’t have any priorities, it’s like collecting shoes was a hobby. However, these days as I’m living on my own, I need to be more conscious or careful about spending my hard-earned money, I’ve many bills to pay.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Hard-earned money [noun] – money that is earned for working so hard

Tip: The speaker focuses on his previous experience to be able to develop a bit longer answer which he’s able to give the examiner an idea of who he was in terms of buying shoes. Talking about previous experiences helps you develop better answers.

Do you know anyone who likes to buy a lot of shoes?

Considering my circles of friends or my family, I know no one. I guess they’re not really into shoes or they’re just satisfied having a pair or two. If I know someone who has that kind of habit, I can assume that he must have very deep pockets.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Circle-of-friends [noun] – a number of friends who do things as a group

Deep pockets [noun] – to have a lot of money

Tip: Since the speaker doesn’t know anyone and in order not to make his answer very short, he uses the conditional form ‘If I know…’ to make his answer a bit longer while hitting a good mark in the criterion of Grammar. The conditional tense is considered advanced grammar.
