Clothing has been recognised as a resource by mankind that can be used for their advantage in many ways. The clothing and fashion industry has been ever evolving to meet the needs and satisfy the growing wants of the consumers. Clothing needs can be Physical, psychological, social and aesthetic.
Physical- Clothing can fulfil our physical needs in terms of physical survival, safety, health & comfort. Clothing functions as a second skin and covers and protects our body from the extreme environment. For example, athletes participating in Cross Country run, prefer wearing long sleeves t-shirt, with a good thermal or wicking base layer and climate control qualities which keeps them comfortable and stay protected from extreme climate conditions.
A bunker gear worn by fire fighters is especially designed to give them protection from extreme temperature, which meets their physical needs for safety.
Psychological- Clothing needs can be Phsychological in terms of emotional well being and mental comfort. Clothing is an extension of self- inner expression. It is clue to our self-Image, Self-confidence and Self-esteem.
Attractive head scarves or beanies for chemo patients help them overcome their feeling of unattractiveness and vulnerability. It helps them maintain their self -confidence.

The clothing designed with Velcro closures instead of buttons that still retain the traditional styling serve as a good option for people with special needs. A Childs’ dressing can boost his/her attitude & confidence. Comfortable clothing and often letting them dress by themselves boosts confidence in children at an early stage.
Social- Clothing needs can be social, in terms of acceptance, task or belongingness. Clothing helps to establish, identify and maintain social roles.
For example, a white coat, separates doctors in the hospital from rest of the staff. A cheerleader feels the belongingness in the group by means of the costume. The workplace is known for attention to professional appearance.
Aesthetic- Clothing needs are also for aesthetic reasons. An individual can express his/her creativity through the art of clothing. A Certain way of clothing enhances beauty and appearance. For example, the co*cktail Black little Dress has been a long-time fashion staple, the wearer feels glamourous and graceful in the dress. A beautifully crafted wedding gown enhances the appearance of the bride.
The end purpose of all clothing is to meet the needs of individual wearer; therefore, clothing has become an indispensable resource for the mankind. Today, we witness that the Global Readymade garment industry has had a significant growth over time. Worldwide, Readymade garments are mass produced and India is amongst the world's largest producers and growth in this sector looks promising ahead.
