Since being held in 2005, direct local head elections directly gave a birth to negative trends in politics and local governance. A numbers of the negative tendencies phenomenon massively growing, such as political dowry, money politics, also “the shadow state” and political dynasties phenomena in several areas. This study is trying to discuss a variety of negative symptoms or the dark side from the implementation of direct local head elections. The data collection method in this study is using qualitative approach, through the interviews, literature review, and documents or reports assessment of the mass media. The research found that in the general direct local head election has spawned a number of negative trends in its implementation, both in the upstream and downstream of the sides process, which is precisely the paradoxical with the principle of democracy that will be built, consolidated, and institutionalized through the local head elections.
