In Praise Of Moles (2024)

While Cindy Crawford may have pioneered the look (lest we forget her solitary beauty spot was the beauty standard of the Nineties), beachy beauty Gigi has dragged moles into the new millennium. And she does have a lot of them. And she’s not alone – Jennifer Lawrence is moley and proud and Dutch model Jessie Bloemendaal (a firm fixture at the couture shows last week) has also made hers a "thing".

While I don’t cover my beauty spots up (I wouldn’t know where to begin), they’re something I’ve frequently felt self-conscious about, particularly when strangers comment (yes, this happens, a man on the tube sidled up to me last summer to tell me he "loved" them).

It’s not particularly surprising. If there’s one "ideal" that’s remained tyrannical over the past few decades, it’s the trend for flawless skin. Body shapes have altered, heights have wavered, but a clear and even complexion has always been a beauty prerequisite.

Not for photographer Brock Elbank, who made his name capturing the beauty of people with freckles to highlight the beauty of our differences.
