Emily in Paris Parents Guide – Is it OK for Kids?

Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) is off to Paris after the marketing company she works for in Chicago acquires a smaller French company that specializes in luxury brands. She goes to teach them brand marketing and social media. When she first arrives, nobody wants her there as she’s the typical rude American who doesn’t even bother to speak French!

Feeling lonely, she thankfully makes a new friend, Mindy (Ashley Park ) who teaches her all about Paris and how to deal with her mean French coworkers. Emily in Paris is full of all sorts of cliches, but overall will appeal to the audience who wants a soap opera-like storyline to forget about their own troubles.

In Season 2, after stumbling into a love triangle with her neighbor and her first real French friend, Emily is determined to focus on her work — which is getting more complicated by the day. In French class, she meets a fellow expat who both infuriates and intrigues her.

In Season 3 of Emily in Paris, Sylvie and associates leave Savoir to start a new one when American Madeline seems to be ruining the firm with her American ideals. Emily again has to make life decisions and choices in where to live, who to date, and where to work.

Age Rating: Why is Emily in Paris Rated TV-MA?

Season 3 of Emily in Paris is rated TV-MA for language and sexual content, which means some content not be suitable for kids under 17.

Language in Emily in Paris

There is a bit of language in Season 1 of Emily in Parisincluding sh*t, a**, a**hole, bi*ch, damn, and an f-word. There is also crude language like pu–y, balls, and douche, though the latter means shower in French.

In Season 2, the language continues with uses of sh*t, bit*h, and there are more uses of f*ck.

In Season 3, there’s more of the same and sexual language.

Mature Content: Is Emily in Paris for Teens?

So here’s where things get dicey. There is a lot of talk of sex and people having it with passionate kissing, taking clothes off, characters in underwear, bras, etc. There is no explicit nudity except two scenes where a model walks down a street naked and you see her entire backside (Season 1, Episode 3).

In the first episode, two characters are having phone sex and one character brings out a vibrator. You also hear a lot of moaning and yelling while characters are involved in intercourse. Also one character has sex with a minor and then makes a joke of it once finding out they were under 18.

There is a lot of drinking, smoking, use of drugs and affairs. Someone draw a penis on papers and another character gifts bread in the shape of a penis. Overall there’s just a lot of conversation and sexual innuendos including sexual quotes in Emily in Paris.

Season 2 still has a lot of sex. While there isn’t nudity while people are having sex, you do see shirtless men and girls in bras.

In Season 2, Episode 3 of Emily in Paris, there are a lot of boobs and topless women for an extended period of time in a sauna. The scene is probably at least 2 1/2 minutes long with French girls having conversations topless and close-ups of boobs. It’s not meant to be sexual and girls hanging out.

The last episode shows a male strip club and naked behinds.

In Season 3 there are some sexual jokes and a lot of talk about sex. Opposite sex couples and same sex couple are seen kissing, making out, and shown in bed together. Scenes show characters in their underwear and brief nudity from behind. You can see some side boob in some instances as well as with certain outfits.

Is Emily in Paris Appropriate for Kids Under 16?

I would recommend Emily in Paris for ages 16 and up. Really, I would recommend 18 and up, but I know that’s unrealistic for some. Lily Collins is annoyingly charming sometimes. Her character can’t make up her mind whether she’s wide-eyed and naive (being shocked at a naked model or being nude in a sauna) or carefree in Paris (having sex with guys she just met a few hours before).

Although she has to endure some mean girl behavior from coworkers and boy drama, things seem to always work out in her favor. Her positivity and kindness are refreshing, but sometimes the whole ‘pretty girl gets what she wants’ storyline gets old.

The costuming is divine and yes, you’ll eat up the fashion. Supporting characters provide humor and snark, and the love triangles will reel you in to the next episode and the next. The 30-minute episodes are the right length to not require too much commitment, but make it an easy binge.

Emily in Paris does introduce topics worth discussion, like the Me, Too movement, male power, and sexism in advertising.

While Emily argues sexism, another argues the difference in French and American morality, but I don’t think the French will be too happy about all these cliches. And the hypocrisy shown once a character does find out she has sex with a minor is a little dangerous. It’s just shrugged off.

There’s nothing sophisticated in the script, but Emily in Paris has just enough to tempt you to the end of the season. Darren Star knows what he’s doing in appealing to the mass audience.

The frivolous antics of Emily continue, but you can’t help but stay tuned.
