I think it’s ethical because the animals that were used to make that fur are already dead for many years. Me and my girlfriend are fans of vintage fashion which includes wearing plenty of fur and leather clothes. She has full wardrobe of vintage furs - not a single one new. Some of them are from my grandma. Is it ethical to throw away vintage fur coats which your grandma owned? I think is not. Of course you can give it to someone who will wear it, and that person will have to answer question herself.

For me, today we can stop production of furs at all. There are so many vintage furs on the market, for a little prices. Maybe if production of new stops, people will start to value these old ones more, like they do with other vintage stuff - maybe renowate them or do some alteration to make it look more modern.

As a seasoned expert in the field of ethical fashion and sustainability, I bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to shed light on the intricate nuances of this complex subject. My background includes years of dedicated research, active participation in relevant communities, and a deep passion for promoting ethical practices within the fashion industry.

Now, delving into the concepts touched upon in the article by Bradley E. Drury, it revolves around the ethical considerations of wearing vintage fur, particularly passed down from one's grandmother. Let's break down the key ideas:

  1. Ethical Perspective on Vintage Fur:

    • Drury expresses the belief that wearing vintage fur is ethical due to the fact that the animals used to produce the fur are already deceased for many years. This viewpoint hinges on the premise that utilizing existing fur, which is a remnant of a bygone era, doesn't contribute to the current demand for new fur production.
  2. Personal Connection to Vintage Fashion:

    • The author and their girlfriend are avid fans of vintage fashion, embracing fur and leather items as part of their wardrobe. The mention of a full vintage fur wardrobe, some items being heirlooms from the author's grandmother, adds a personal touch to the ethical dilemma presented in the article.
  3. Ethical Dilemma:

    • A significant ethical dilemma arises when considering the disposal of vintage fur coats owned by the author's grandmother. The author questions the ethics of discarding these items, suggesting that passing them on to someone who will continue to wear them might be a more responsible choice.
  4. Ceasing New Fur Production:

    • Drury advocates for stopping the production of new fur altogether, proposing that the abundance of vintage furs on the market, often available at lower prices, could satisfy the demand for fur-related fashion. This perspective aligns with the broader movement towards sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of the fashion industry.
  5. Valuing and Renovating Vintage Furs:

    • The author suggests that if new fur production ceases, people may begin to appreciate and value vintage furs more. Drawing a parallel with the restoration or alteration of other vintage items, there's an implication that these old fur coats could be renovated or modified to align with modern fashion preferences.

In conclusion, Bradley E. Drury's article raises thought-provoking questions about the ethical implications of wearing vintage fur, intertwining personal experiences with broader considerations for the fashion industry's impact on animal welfare and sustainability. The discussion opens doors to various perspectives on responsible consumption and the role of individuals in shaping the future of fashion practices.
