They were the must-have accessory of the ’80s and ’90s but bum bags quickly fell out of fashion, becoming the butt of jokes and parody songs.
But now the humble accessory has officially made a comeback of epic proportions.
The bum bag, which was originally made from synthetic materials, came into fashion in the 1980s and were especially trendy in the 1990s. However, since then, they’ve often been as old-fashioned.
Historically, people strapped a bum bag to the front of their body to protect themselves from bandits.
But the bum bag, or fanny pack as our US friends call it, took a high-end turn last year, becoming more of a luxury purse — or “belt bag,” as Gucci described it.
It was Fashion Week in 2018 when the bum bag received renewed exposure from Prada, Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Balenciaga, just to name a few.
Some of these designer bags can retail for up to $1500 and are being worn by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Rihanna and Jaden Smith.
And more and more brands are introducing their take on the humble bum bag, with some, such as this version from VIVRA, eliminating the need for a belt.
The re-invented belt-less bum bag design simply folds over the waistband of any garment and is snapped securely into place with special neodymium magnets – meaning that it won’t move an inch.
They’re even popping up at department stores like Target Australia, selling this Fila branded one for men online.
Perhaps it’s time for us to add a new one to your own wardrobe.
