Jackie Bouvier and John F. Kennedy were married on September 12, 1953, in Newport, Rhode Island, in front of some 700 wedding guests. In honor of what would have been the couple's 61st anniversary, various news outlets have been trotting out pictures of their wedding day, with a dapper JFK in a morning coat, and Jackie looking radiant in her now-iconic wedding dress—which, it turns out, she hated.
According to Time, the 24-year-old bride—"already a tastemaker with a reputation for devil-may-care chic'"—wanted an unfussy dress with sleek lines. Instead, she "bowed to family pressure to wear something more traditional, despite thinking it looked like a lampshade."

The "lampshade" dress and its 50 yards of ivory silk taffeta almost didn't see the light of day when a pipe burst in designer Ann Lowe's New York studio a week before Jackie and JFK's nuptials. The dress—which had originally taken eight weeks to cut and sew—was re-created by the designer and her team just in time for the wedding.
Talk about pre-wedding stress.
