Jay Leno broke a world record driving the Tesla Model S Plaid earlier this year, now holding the quarter-mile world record time for a stock production car.
He achieved the feat while filming an episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, which will air later this month on 10 November.
In a clip released by CNBC, the comedian drives the Tesla at Famoso Raceway in California, aiming to beat the previous quarter-mile world record time of 9.4 seconds.
Leno smashes that record in spectacular fashion, crossing the line in just 9.247 seconds.
It took a few tries at the drag strip, but the Model S shattered a record. Reaching the quarter-mile mark from a standstill in just 8.71 seconds, the modded Plaid reached a speed of 158 miles per hour.
The Tesla Model S Plaid is one of the fastest production cars in the world, with a 0-60 mph time of 1.99 seconds. However, there are a few gasoline-powered cars that can keep up with it. One such car is the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+.
The Lucid Air Sapphire electric car has become the fastest sedan to complete the industry-standard “quarter-mile” – or 402 metre – drag strip run, beating its main rival, the Tesla Model S Plaid.
But gasoline and horsepower tend to pay off at high speeds, which is why the Bugatti ends up winning both races. Especially in the half-mile roll, you see the Bugatti struggle at first and then charge past the Tesla on its way to a 206-mph run. The Tesla runs out of steam in the low 180s.
In this case, the limit is 328 kph, which equals precisely 203.8 mph. The highway is actually quiet enough for a full-on acceleration run from a standstill, so in addition to a 200-mph run, we see just how ridiculously quick the Model S Plaid gets there.
A family saloon that can go 200 MPH. Tesla's fastest Model S can accelerate quickly, but with the recently revealed, optional track package, it also has a very decent top speed for what is essentially a family sedan: 200 miles per hour.
Think "sneaker launch meets fighter jet takeoff." The regular version hits 100 mph in a mind-blowing 4.2 seconds. That's quicker than Usain Bolt on a sugar rush!
As with the Ludicrous and Ludicrous Plus modes of yore, the Plaid grade doesn't gain additional performance by increasing battery size. Instead, it does so by adding a third electric motor. In the movie, Plaid is even quicker than Ludicrous Mode, which plays out in reality.
