The appearance of Julia Ormond on AMC’s “Mad Men” threw some viewers for a loop on Sunday night. The actress turned up as the mother of Jessica Pare’s 26-year-old character Megan Draper. And Ormond’s Marie Calvet, with her mid-1960s’ hairstyle and clothes, made her seem aged beyond her years.
Twitter was abuzz with questions. Who was that actress? Geneviève Bujold? Juliette Binoche?
One viewer even thought she was remiscent of 1950s/’60s-era Leslie Caron.
Actually, Ormond’s casting makes perfect sense. Ormond is 47, so she is old enough to play Megan’s mother. Also, Ormond appears to be aging naturally.
A couple of years ago, Redbook asked her if she wasn’t flattered to have been a ’90s “It” girl and admired for her beauty. She responded:
“I’m so happy that, at 43, I’m no longer that. I couldn’t wait for the meaty roles that are hard to come by when you’re 22. Believe me, I’m not totally disconnected from the aging process, but I’m enjoying the richness of the work that’s finally coming to me now.”
GoodPlasticSurgery.com in 2008 said Ormond appears to be aging without cosmetic work:
“Julia Ormond was born in 1965 and showed up at a film premiere bearing all her years. Her facial skin is heavily lined. I have never had the impression that she is sunworshipper, perhaps she is a heavy smoker. Julia is 43 years old. I do think her skin is highly aged looking considering her birth date.
“What could she do to have fewer wrinkles? Her wrinkles are deep, I don’t think that botox or peels would work here. She’d have to get a facelift.”
And last year, LifeGoesStrong.com cited her in their list of “natural beauties” (qualifying that as actresses who are aging “without obvious plastic surgery”), saying:
“So many female celebrities over 40 sport plastic surgery or a reliance on Botox, that it’s becoming rare to see a star who actually has wrinkles like most of us real women do.”
