Character[]

Julie was born March 10, 1980 at Columbia Presbyterian in New York. Then 18-year-old Carole gave Julie up for adoption as she did not have the means to look after her newborn. The father was not aware of the birth. Julie went on to have a loving family and a good upbringing. At the end of Julie's sophom*ore year, her birth mother visits Julie to tell her that her biological father is ill and needs a transplant, hoping that Julie will be a match. She is, but she lies and tells everyone that she's not. Julie spends that summer with her biological family, as her biological father's illness grows worse, and he succumbs to it. After that, Julie has a breakdown and leaves New York.[1]

Story[]

Julie arrives in New York from Maine and, like most other freshmen, doesn't know anyone. She meets Felicity in class where Julie sees her crying and offers comfort. They become friends, albeit with a caveat: Felicity introduces Julie to Ben, who becomes very interested in Julie and the feeling is mutual. Julie temporarily stymies their mutual attraction when she learns how infatuated Felicity is with Ben and they agree to be just friends. Julie reveals to Felicity that she came to New York to find her biological parents. Julie meets Zack, a film student at the University of New York, in the laundry room amidst Zack realizing that he has accidentally dyed all of his clothes pink. Zack pursues Julie, who is uncertain how she feels. At the Halloween party at the Loft, he kisses Julie and she freaks out. She agrees to start seeing him and watches his short film, which he later asks her to record music for. One night, Zack comes to Julie's dorm room and rapes her. Julie is traumatised and Zack eventually realises what he has done to her. He apologises and leaves the university. Julie tries to go on with her life in New York, but finds it difficult after the trauma she has experienced. Ben is there for Julie and comforts her. This leads to them developing feelings for each other and they start dating. Julie slowly seems to be getting a little better and starts writing her music again, performing at Epstein Bar. Julie also starts her search for her biological mother in earnest and finds that she lives in New York. Julie hesitates in telling Carole Anderson who she is and instead takes and internship at her firm to be near and get to know her. Ben advices Julie against this, saying she should be honest about who she is. When Julie tells Carole, Julie gets disappointed as Carole does not want anyone to know her secret, despite the fact that she married Julie's biological father and had two more children with him - Julie's biological brother and sister.

Relationships[]

Felicity Porter

Julie and Felicity meet during orientation her first day at the University of New York. They become instant friends and remain close until Felicity goes behind Julie's back and starts exploring a romance with Ben.

Ben Covington

Ben and Julie are interested in each other almost immediately after being introduced. Julie finds it too difficult to cope with Felicity's larger-than-life crush on Ben, so she decides to cool things off with Ben and just be friends. Soon afterwards, Julie meets Zack, a film student at UNY and they start dating. After Zack rapes Julie, Ben is a big part of helping Julie start to feel safe again. During this time, they begin to develop feelings for each other and end up dating seriously. Julie's search for her birth mother plays a big part in their relationship and Ben tries his best to be there for Julie. After a while they seem to be on different paths and Julie feels that Ben is growing distant. She ends things with Ben, but then learns that he cheated on her with Felicity. Julie stops talking to both of them. When sophom*ore year rolls around, Julie is still healing from the pain of their betrayal. When her roommates turn out to be a nightmare, Sean offers that Julie can move in to the loft. She does, despite her and Ben's estrangement. Ben starts to realise that he, Julie and Sean are like a family and makes an effort in mending their relationship so they can stay together in the loft. Julie eventually forgives Ben and they become close friends, always looking out for one another and have a deep bond. When Ben's father reappears in his life at the start of their junior year, Ben confides in Julie, showing the strength of their bond. Julie, however, has had a traumatic experience over the summer she has not shared with her friends, which they learn about on a tape Julie leaves behind as she leaves college. During their senior year, Julie visits New York and seems to be doing better. She and Ben go out on a date, but decide to just be friends. Despite this, their connection remains.
