Is Kilz 2 a good exterior primer? ›

Great as primer or sealer. Used it on some weathered wood railing and deck where paint had worn off and was exposed. Good coverage, soaked in well and dried quickly. It was the perfect base for the new paint.

I apply 2 coats when I'm covering a strong color, or when covering serious stains on the wall. The original Killz is oil based and I've heard that it covers better, but I've had no issues with a single coat over drywall using the water-based Killz2. However, when I use Killz2 on raw wood, I use 2 coats.

In short, you will typically need 2 coats of primer for most painting projects.

KILZ 3^® PREMIUM Primer is ready for paint in just one hour. After the primer has dried, lightly sand the surfaces once more to ensure a smooth finish. Be sure to remove any dust with a tack cloth or damp cloth.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR PRIMER TO DRY? Most latex primers dry to the touch in 30 minutes to one hour. But for best results, don't paint until the primer completely dries—which can take up to 3 hours, depending on temperature and humidity. Once the primer is completely dry, it's prime time for painting.

It's ready to brush, roll or spray and can be topcoated after one hour with latex or oil-based paint. Use KILZ STANDARD Primer on almost all interior surfaces including wood, drywall, plaster, brick, masonry and more. Not recommended for flooring, glossy surfaces, mold and mildew prone surfaces or for stainblocking.

Shake can vigorously for 1 minute after mixing ball begins to rattle and often during use. Hold can upright, moving from side-to-side while spraying lightly and evenly about 12" from area being painted. 2-3 thin coats produce best results. Topcoat with water-based or oil-based paint after 60 minutes.

SURFACE PREPARATION:

The surface must be clean, free of dust, grease, wax, peeling paint, mold, mildew and wallpaper paste. If washing is necessary, use a non-soapy detergent or a TSP substitute. Rinse well and allow to dry. Glossy Surfaces:For maximum adhesion, scuff sand the surface thoroughly before priming.

How long does Kilz primer take to dry? According to their website, Kilz is ready for a topcoat in as little as 60 minutes. In our experience, Kilz is one of the faster-drying primers out there.

Once you've completed your last coat of primer, you should go ahead and sand before applying your first coat of base color. However, there is no reason at all to sand between coats of primer. It will only add more work to your plate with no visible benefits.

Shelf life under normal conditions is two years unopened. Partially used cans might develop skinning if not tightly sealed.
