Largest permanent IMAX screen unveiled in Germany (2024)

Just when you thought IMAX screens couldn’t possibly get any bigger, Traumplast Leonberg (Germany) broke the records for the largest permanent IMAX screen and thelargest permanent cinema screen (overall) in Leonberg, Germany on 6 December 2022.

Traumpalast Leonberg is a family-owned and operated multiplex cinema chain with a feel-good concept at eight locations in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

As cinema operators, a record centered around their screens was a no-brainer.

The record-breaking journey began with their planned expansion of their cinema branch in Leonberg, where owner Marius Lochmann wanted to offer guests an unforgettable cinema experience.

The construction of the IMAX cinema screen began in 2020 and wasn’t finalized until September 2021, just in time for the release of the final instalment of the Daniel Craig's James Bond series ‘No Time to Die’.

It wasn’t until December last year when the screen was authenticated by Guinness World Records and given the title of largest permanent cinema screen (overall) measuring an enormous 814.8 square meters (38.80m x 21.00m).

To put this into perspective, the screen is wider than a Boeing 737 airliner.

The screen currently stands as the largest due to the closure of IMAX Sydney, which has been undergoing extensive redevelopment.

For their IMAX screen, measuring 38.80m x 21.00 m (127.2 ft x 68.8 ft) helped Traumplast Leonberg also clinch the title of largest permanent IMAX screen.

To authenticate these records, a specialist external company spent the whole day precisely measuring the screen.

The screen was measured with modern laser sensor technology, where laser points were placed with high precision every 40 centimetres in a 3D grid.

The special software was then able to read out the measurement result of the screen with millimetre precision.

Once both records were confirmed, there was only one way to celebrate... A movie screening!

In combination with their certificate presentation, cinema-goers were also treated to a preview of the long-awaited Avatar sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water.

On an appropriate coloured blue carpet, fans were accompanied by performers dressed as characters from the film.

“We, the entire Traumpalast-Team, have made a dream come true with a Guinness World Records [title]- twice. My father and I are especially proud of these records because we know how much sweat and tears are behind the whole project of the biggest screen in the world. By cineastes for cineastes, for our great guests, for everyone.” Marius Lochmann, CEO of Traumplast Leonberg
