The eight-time Olympic champion competed in Puma spikes throughout his career but it has been arch rival Nike who have got the jump with the latest technology.
It has got to the point where athletes who have contracts with rival shoe companies are being allowed to wear the Nike shoes because they are so superior.
Distant records have been shredded over the past 12 months with the new carbon-plated, thick-soled shoes and now that is starting to translate in the sprint ranks which is why Bolt is worried about his 100m and 200m world records.
American Trayvon Bromell, who is the favourite to take Bolt’s 100m title in Tokyo, has downplayed the impact of shoes.
“I don’t think there’s a lot of data to show that they’re having such a big improvement,” Bromell, who ran the fastest time of the year 9.77sec, said.
The Nike Air Zoom Maxfly spikes were used by Jamaican two-time Olympic gold medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce when she clocked the fastest 100m time in 33 years on June 5 in Kingston with a career-best 10.63sec.
Only American world record holder Florence Griffith-Joyner has gone faster, with 10.49sec in 1988.
“You can give the spikes to somebody else and they’ll probably not do the same things that I’ve done, so I’m not counting myself out of the hard work me and my coach has put in,” Fraser-Pryce said.
“Maybe the combination of both - having good products and good runners combined - makes for a very good end-product. So for me, I can‘t single-handedly point to the spikes.”
American Sha’Carri Richardson, who lost her spot in the 100m in Tokyo after receiving a one-month suspension for using marijuana, moved up to number six on the all-time list with 10.72sec in April using the shoe.
In less than a year, Nike super spikes have been used to set world bests in the men’s and women’s 5,000 and 10,000.

“They’re a lot more comfortable, when you race you just don’t feel your calves and they just don’t bang your body up anymore.”
This year Linden Hall broke the Australian 1500m record wearing the spikes, taking it off Jessica Hull who had worn the Nike shoes when she’d done it.
And in the 800m, Catriona Bissett slashed almost a second off her national record last month in the new spikes.
