I LOVE the name Mad-a-lynn, despite the popularity of Madison and the nn Maddy.
But I prefer the spelling Madeline over Madelyn?
Is Madeline pronounced Mad-a-line? or could it swing to Mad-a-lynn too?
and if you think only the -lyn ending works then, how would you spell it?

Maybe I date myself, but long before all these alternate spellings for Madeline appeared, it was pronounced like mad-a-lynn.

I pronounce Madeline as Mad-a-line. (In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines. The smallest one was Madeline. - sorry, just had to throw this in -love this name and always loved Madeline
)
Madelyn would be my favorite spelling for the pronunciation you are going for.

I love Madeline the best-but it is pronounced MadeLINE, like Caroline.
I like Madeleine (traditional french.)
Madelyn is fine too. Not into Madalyn.
eta: like the PP, I also loved the Madeline books!

My preferred spelling = Madelyn (is also the most common spelling)
Madeline is actually more common than Madelyn, per the SSA, but barely. ?I looked it up because I was surprised that Madelyn was common- I have not known anyone IRL that spelled it that way. ?I prefer Madeleine or Madeline- they seem more classic to me. ?Any way you spell it, the name is really gorgeous.

LOVE the name Madeline - from the book! I have all the books and have always known I will name my daughter Madeline and Maddy for short one day. I think most people would think it was pronounced Mad-a-line.
I think Madalynn is so cute too!

Madeline, like Caroline, can be pronounced either "lyn" or "line."
I personally prefer the French spelling, Madeleine.

Yes, Madeline is more common but it's often pronounced as Mad-a-line. Madelyn is the most common spelling for the pronunciation Mad-a-lyn, which is what I thought she was going for. I consider the Madeline and Madelyn different names so I didn't consider Madeline a spelling of Madelyn. But I may be in the minority here. Does that make sense?

Sister's friends spells it w/ the line. I've never called her anything but "Madalyn." Growing up I never knew there were other ways to spell it.

I think it's interesting so many people have said Madeline would be pronounced as Mad-ah-line because I've known several people with this name in several age ranges, and not a single one pronounced their name that way.

I like the French spelling of Madeleine. I think you could definitely pronounce Madeline like Mad-a-lynn--I've known several Madelines who say it that way. I don't like Madelyn as much, and I really dislike Madalyn--that looks like a made-up spelling of someone who didn't know how to spell Madeline/Madeleine to me.

I too prefer the Madeline/Madeleine spelling. But the Y in Madelyn is not a "random" Y. It's an appropriate and widely used Y
