Maltesers 189g packs have been swapped for 175g packs, The Grocer can reveal
Mars has shrunk the size of its Malteserssharing bags in a bid to mitigate rising costs.
Its 189g Maltesers packs have been swapped for 175g packs - but prices have remained the same.
At the time of writing, Tesco was selling the new 175g Maltesers pouch at £2, up from £1.99 for the previous 189g size, research by The Grocer using Assosia data reveals [12 w/e 27 July 2022].
Asda and Sainsbury’s were still selling the 189g pouches. In Sainsbury’s, however, they were being sold on promotion, reduced from £2.50 to £2.
A spokeswoman for Mars said the confectionery giant had “been absorbing the rising costs of raw materials and operations for some time, but the growing pressures we are facing mean that more needs to be done”.
“Reducing the size of our products is not a decision we take lightly, but we’re confident that our chocolate brands still offer our customers and consumers the best possible value for money without compromising on quality or taste.”
It comes as The Grocer earlier this month revealed the confectionery giant had similarlyshrunk some of its Twix multipacksto cut costs.
A swathe of other big brands have cut down pack sizes recently to fight cost inflation.
Unilever shrunk the size of its Magnum multipacks, for instance, with retail prices rising in some cases.
In the chillers, meanwhile, spreads giant Upfield has shrunk packs of Flora, Bertolli and I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter, blaming “significant commodity cost increases”.
