I'm a...survivor, Black Lung! A survivor! That's all there is; living and dying.
~ Micah Bell to Arthur Morgan when confronted with his treachery.
You shot me [laughs]...you shot me pretty good.
~ Micah's last words to Dutch Van Der Linde before his death.

Micah Bell III is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Andrew Milton) of the 2018 action-adventure game Red Dead Redemption II.

In Red Dead Redemption 2, he is a major character for the first five chapters, the final antagonist in Chapter 6, and the main antagonist of Beecher's Hope, the second part of the Epilogue.

He is the extremely psychopathic and dangerous member of the Van der Linde gang, in which he killed immoral amounts of people for money and sport. He constantly kills people for the smallest of things, such as killing his old friend for not being able to stop him from getting arrested. He eventually rats the gang out for his own gain, murders Arthur Morgan in cold blood and runs away. He is eventually caught by John Marston, who kills him by shooting him several times.

He was portrayed by Peter Blomquist in motion capture, who also played Harlan J. Fontaine in L.A. Noire.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • At the age of 17, he and his father murdered two people by slitting their throats and hanging them on the rafters, proving that he was always evil even at a young age.
  • During his days of joining the Van der Linde gang, he commits several atrocities, such as murder, robberies, and more for money and himself. While he helps most of the gang members and shows full respect towards Dutch Van Der Linde, he does this for selfish and pragmatic reasons only because of his betrayal later on.
  • He often antagonizes and bullies the gang including Arthur Morgan and John Marston.
  • He holds several supremacist views which he extends to every member of the gang:
    • He makes racist remarks towards Charles, Lenny and Javier.
    • Sexually harasses and slu*t-shames Abigail and insults Karen's alcoholism.
    • He makes ageist comments towards Hosea, Uncle and Miss Grimshaw on how he will outlive them and on how Miss Grimshaw's good looks have faded with age.
    • He repeatedly belittles Uncle and Reverend Swanson while constantly stating they should be "let go" or "put down" for being "lazy parasites".
  • He shows no care for the members who die as he outright ignores the deaths of Sean, Kieran, Hosea, Lenny and Molly; despite witnessing them in front of him.
  • He participated in the Blackwater Massacre, in which 37 people were killed, and seemingly goaded Dutch into shooting the unarmed Heidi McCourt, which instigated the massacre.
  • He tried to attack Sadie Adler and frightened her. This resulted in him knocking over a nearby lantern and catching her cabin on fire. Despite being accidental, this heavily traumatized Sadie, losing her home and one of the last reminders of her late husband. Not only this, he shows no remorse for causing her cabin to burn down.
  • He kills two men in Strawberry during a drunken brawl. Although this is offscreen, it has clear onscreen effects as Micah is arrested and the player is forced to break him out.
  • During his escape from prison he shoots his cellmate in cold blood for being an O'Driscoll.
  • He goes on a homicidal rampage immediately after being broken out of Strawberry's jail just to get his confiscated pistols back, dragging a reluctant Arthur into helping him fend off authorities and leaving half the town shot dead. In the middle of it all, he forces himself into a home and brutally murders Skinny, an old friend of his, and his wife.
    • It's later revealed in the Epilogue that Skinny was a father, and Micah orphaned his young son when he killed Skinny and his wife. This left the son with only his dog as his last family member.
  • It's implied he abuses and neglects his horse, Baylock. After Micah is reunited with his horse in chapter 2, Baylock's hygiene will deteriorate and he will act aggressively if Arthur tries to interact with him.
  • While riding horseback to camp, he complains that none of the women there'll have sex with him even with a gun to their head and doesn't deny anything when accused of attempting to do so.
  • It's implied he feigns his apology to Arthur after Arthur escaped his torment from the O'Driscolls. Even if the apology was genuine, Micah would subvert it when he ultimately betrays the gang.
  • It's strongly implied that he killed the gang's dog, Cain. In a conversation with Jack, he states "The dog ain't coming back." Only reinforced when Arthur confronts him for it, he nonchalantly replies "[Cain] musta run away. Dumb mutt." He even kicks Cain in chapter 3 for being a "parasite".
  • When Dutch starts losing his mind and Arthur becomes weak, Micah starts to manipulate Dutch into horrible plans and turning him against John and Arthur.
  • He ratted the gang out to the Pinkertons when it seemed they would get caught or were becoming weaker, not only that but this makes Micah responsible for the events that happened in the gang, along with Leviticus Cornwall.
  • He convinces Dutch not to help Abigail after she is captured by Pinkertons.
  • He killed Susan Grimshaw when Arthur revealed that he was the rat.
  • He tries to murder both Arthur and John, succeeding with the former (either directly killing Arthur if he has low honor; or if Arthur has high honor, he'll critically wound Arthur and leave him to die from his injuries).
  • After the dissolution of the gang, Micah forms his own gang of outlaws, committing all kinds of crimes. He killed at least two dozen people during this time, including a little girl.
  • Despite calling Cleet and Joe his "friends," it's clear Micah only values how useful they are to him as he would later subvert any possibility of friendship. When Cleet, a member of his gang, tried to stop Micah from murdering that little girl, Micah became furious and tried to kill Cleet as well. He additionally showed no concern, vengefulness or grief when Joe was killed by John Marston.
  • He threatens to "pay a call" to Abigail and Jack after killing John.
  • He uses Sadie as a hostage after Dutch showed up and threatens to kill her unless John joins his gang.
  • Upon being shot by Dutch, after the former realized Micah's deception, Micah raises his guns in a final attempt to kill both John and Dutch, only for John shooting Micah multiple times and receiving a satisfying death.
  • Even though he has some comedic lines and scenes, none of them detract how vile he is, and he is still taken 100% seriously as a threat, as all of these lines and scenes are simply meant to show how cruel he is.
  • In general, Micah is so heinous and evil even by the standards of the series, without redeeming qualities. While Dutch sees his gang as being a group of bad men (and women), most of the gang members have a sense of honor (e.g. not attacking civilians), Dutch at least showed remorse for his actions, and even Ross had some honor as he gave back John his family after fulfilling his deal and seemed to be on good terms with his family. Micah has none of that, he loves killing and making others suffer, and only cares about himself.
  • While he did learn to do many crimes (including murdering two people as mentioned) from his father, he also mentioned having a brother who rejected their father’s heinousness to find a better life, showing that Micah was capable of being a better person, but refused. He'll also openly badmouth his brother by calling him "spineless" and "a coward". Furthermore, he never seems to mention his father outside of their crimes, making any care for them debatable, if not outright absent.

Trivia[]

  • Micah might have a somewhat honorable side, as he will leave Arthur to die instead of killing him if Arthur has high honor, while murdering Arthur in cold blood if the player has low honor. Given Micah's malicious personality and inexcusable actions, it's highly unlikely Micah actually has an honorable side, meaning this was likely just a sad*stic blow to Arthur's pride than anything else. It's also highly likely that Micah only spared Arthur in order to evade from the lawmen, or that Micah was simply too angry to think about even killing Arthur. However, if it is confirmed he spared Arthur out of respect or remorse (unlikely as it is), then Micah would've lost his Pure Evil status. But, given his lack of mercy overall, this does not disqualify his status altogether.
  • While Micah does appear to care for his Missouri Fox Trotter horse Blaylock, it is unclear whether he genuinely loves him or just sees him as an effective and impressive mode of transportation which would be difficult and expensive to replace with a similarly strong horse if lost. Although given his brutal nature, its highly unlikely he does show genuine care for his own horse altogether.
  • Micah is widely regarded as the single most evil Rockstar villain out there, as well as the most hated. There's even a subreddit solely dedicated to hating on him called "r/F***Micah", which currently has over 16,000 subscribers.
  • Despite being a posthumous character of the first Red Dead Redemption, he was not mentioned along with Arthur Morgan and many other characters from the second game. Although he is responsible for the events of the first game, making him the Greater-Scope Villain of the game.
  • The player will not lose honor when antagonizing Micah in the camp, and will not be chided by the Van der Linde gang, which cements his Pure Evil status.
