The Mod Man Fashion

The Mod Scene

Chelsea boots were also the height of footwear fashion for the 1960's Mods. The perfect match for their smart tailored suits, they were practical enough to be worn whilst riding a scooter.

Mods in the sixties wore Chelsea boots, Cuban heel boots, chisel toes (Winklepickers with the point squared off), Wing Tips (or brogues) or loafers. Denson was a favourite brand selling fashion shoes for men in the 60s.

Mod clothes leaned toward ultra-short and sleeveless. Popular styles were miniskirts, jumpers, shift dresses, patent rain trenches, patent leather go-go boots, and tights. A popular outfit was coordinating a ribbed knit turtleneck with a miniskirt with matching tights with knee boots.

The very first mod fishtail parka was an M-1948 prototype which was a clear crossover from the M-1943 parka to the parka that finally went into production and is the well known M-1948 fishtail parka. Only two of these initial prototype M48 parkas are known to exist.

It's very much alive and well. Hong Kong-based photographer Barney McCann has travelled the length and breadth of Britain photographing people who define themselves as a 'Mod'. "I was really interested in how such an of-the-time style might still exist now.

The parka was the perfect addition to any Mod outfit, it would keep you warm whilst riding around the inner city roads of central London, and at the time it was also a relatively new concept first introduced by the US military during the Korean War.

MARY QUANT, MOD DESIGNER

One of the primary designers and innovators of the Mod style was Mary Quant, her black daisy logo is often still seen in alternative clothing stores today. Quant became the most successful designer and spokesperson for the Mod style and way of life.

Mod is informal slang for modern, and the two words can be used interchangeably. You can also use mod to talk about the specific 1960s subculture of young jazz and soul fans and motor scooter enthusiasts.

Mods preferred 1960s ska music, soul, and R&B, as well as British bands such as The Who, The Yardbirds, and The Kinks. Rockers preferred 1950s rock and roll, mostly by Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran, and Gene Vincent.

The mod subculture was centred on fashion and music, and many mods rode scooters. Mods wore suits and other cleancut outfits, and listened to music genres such as modern jazz, soul, Motown, ska and British blues-rooted bands like the Yardbirds, the Small Faces, and the Who.
