My Hero Academia: 10 Things About Bakugo's Quirk That Make No Sense (2024)

Quirks are, funnily enough, one of the more "quirky" power systems introduced in Shonen Anime for quite a while. They're the trademark "superpowers" of the Anime My Hero Academia, but most of them aren't quite as exciting as Super Strength, Super Speed, or Flight. Instead, heroescombat crime by fighting creatively using powers like infinite hair growth or naval lasers. It's a world where people truly have to think on their feet to make the most of their dorky supernatural abilities, well, most people. Katsuki Bakugo doesn't, he was gifted with one of the most obviously strong Quirks in the series, creating explosions from his palms. But, a lot about this godly power doesn't quite line up with the established mechanics of the setting, and we're here to dig into it a bit.

10 How Does His Use His Quirk With Gloves On?

My Hero Academia: 10 Things About Bakugo's Quirk That Make No Sense (1)

Everyone's favorite screamlord Bakugo creates his trademark explosions by igniting the nitroglycerin-like substance in his sweat with a mysteriousspark plug-esque power only found in his palms. This is about as specific as the author gets, so all we know is that it comes from his sweat, and his palms do the lighting. But, Bakugo's costume includes gloves, gloves that cover his palms. So how does that even work? Fans have cited author Kohei Horikoshi's insert paragraph that says the gloves allow liquid through. But, even if they allowed 90% of it through, the gloves themselves would still get destroyed from the inside after just one explosion.

9 Why Has He Never "Reloaded" With Sweat From Other Areas?

My Hero Academia: 10 Things About Bakugo's Quirk That Make No Sense (2)

So the best part about Quirks is that they aren't as overpowered as standard superpowers. Most of them have obvious drawbacks or requirements. Shinso can't mind control people until they respond to him, Uraraka can't make things float that she hasn't touched, and Bakugo can't make explosions without sweating. In response, the series uses this as his "MP" in a certain way, if he uses up all his sweat, he's out of explosions, or it hurts him to use more. So, why doesn't this "combat genius" simply rub the sweat off other parts of his body for easy reloads? No need to wait for his palms to sweat again right? It makes perfect sense, but we can understand why they wouldn't show the series most popular character rubbing his armpits for ammo.

8 How Has He Not Accidentally Permenantly Damaged Any Of His Victims?

My Hero Academia: 10 Things About Bakugo's Quirk That Make No Sense (3)

So, explosions are destructive. And, they're also deceptively lethal. Even if a person avoids the actual blast, the amount of force coming off of ground zero can melt a person's insides. Now, Katsuki has been shown to create explosions powerful enough to blast through concrete, carry his body through the air, and level entire buildings.

RELATED:

So, how has he never seriously injured or killed anyone up to this point? The kid's a self-righteous jerk and bully up until about halfway through the series, you're telling us he never accidentally made anythingor anyone explode harder than he should have?

7 How Can This Boy Even Still Hear?

My Hero Academia: 10 Things About Bakugo's Quirk That Make No Sense (4)

Another obvious aspect of explosions is that they're loud. The process of an explosion involves a lot of chemical reactions all happening at once, and in a very short window of time. So, the result is usually quitebombastic. And, if an eruptionhappens near the delicate parts of a person's ear, it can wreak havoc and ruin their hearing forever. We know that Bakugo's body is built to resistcombustionsphysically, that's why he can shoot them out and suffer no damage himself. But, there's no way the guy hasn't damaged his ears from point-blank explosions up to this point. Maybe that's why he yells so much?

6 How Has He Never Used His Ignition Palms On Other Parts Of His Body?

My Hero Academia: 10 Things About Bakugo's Quirk That Make No Sense (5)

Once again, Horikoshi hasn't exactly gone into the specifics of how Bakugo ignites his sweat. The manga mentions that his sweat is very similar to Nitroglycerin, but not exactly the same. So, it's probably not as volatile of a substance as the real-life counterpart. That said, we know he ignites it using his palms in some fashion. So, why doesn't he use the igniters in his hands to cause explosions at different parts of his body? He could even use this surprising trick to get a leg up on his class 1B rival, Monoma (well, at least Monoma thinks they're rivals).

5 How Has The Government Or Similar Organizations Never Approached Him?

My Hero Academia: 10 Things About Bakugo's Quirk That Make No Sense (6)

Again, the kid literally produces harmful explosive substances as a byproduct. That's crazy dangerous. How has Bakugo not been approached by the Police Force, government, or even criminals all trying to harness or stockpile his sweat? Remember, it's an incredibly strong combustible that is seemingly non-volatile, something that's rare in the world of explosives.

And, an endless supply of it seems like a goldmine for the Armed Forces or a Terrorist organization. We're just wondering how this kid hasn't been put in a bubble yet is all.

4 How Do His Sweat Grenades Go Off Without His Palms?

My Hero Academia: 10 Things About Bakugo's Quirk That Make No Sense (7)

Remember how earlier we mentioned that he can only light explosions from his palms? How the ignition factor is specific to this bully kid's hands? Well, Bakugos costume has more than just the Grenade Gauntlets or that stupid headpiece, he also has ranged explosive options. These are his Shell Grenades! They're canisters filled with his sweat that are meant to function as actual grenades. But, how do they go off? Do they have an ignition source inside? If so, why doesn't Bakugo have said source put all over his body for a 360-degree range of explosive potential?

3 How Did He Beat Todoroki While Freezing Cold?

My Hero Academia: 10 Things About Bakugo's Quirk That Make No Sense (8)

Temperature and physical movement are important for someone dependant on their sweat. Sure, it's stated that Katsuki can control the flow of his sweat to a certain extent, but the guy has to move around in order to start producing it. In a desert, this kid is probably a weapon of mass destruction, but in the artic, he'd be almost useless.

RELATED:

And funny enough, there's another student in the show that accurately reproduces both of these climates. Shoto Todoroki, Endeavors mistreated prodigy, should be Bakugo's perfect counter just with his left side. Flash freeze Bakugo, and he should be just as useful as a Quirkless Deku, but obviously, they didn't follow this logic in the show since Katsuki ended up the winner at the sports festival.

2 How Does He Fly With Such Wimply Explosions?

My Hero Academia: 10 Things About Bakugo's Quirk That Make No Sense (9)

Katsuki Bakugo can fly, he can literally just fly. The lad isn't just restricted to ground combat, and he can turn on a dime in the air thanks to his immediate propulsion potential. But, do you know how much force it would take to make a person fly and keep them in the air? Way more than what Bakugo actually uses in the show. His flight explosions should be massive, constant, and stamina-draining. Imagine Bakugos a space ship, how much fuel does it take to get them in the air? Instead, the kid bops around with tiny little jet explosions and uses the big guns for his attack moves.

1 How Does He Have Two Quirks?

My Hero Academia: 10 Things About Bakugo's Quirk That Make No Sense (10)

We mentioned it a bit briefly earlier but it's been confirmed that Bakugo actually also has the ability to control the flow of his sweat to a certain extent. Only thing is, MHA likes to pretend that people only have one Quirk. But, the truth is that some actually have one big one and one or two very minor ones. For example, Tokoyami's big perk is Dark Shadow but he also must have a minor Quirk that gives him the appearance and traits of a bird. This is also implied and not at all confirmed by the mangaka though, we fans just love to make theories up after all. So, until it is, this makes absolutely no sense for Bakugo.
