My Hero Academia Just Gave One For All to... [SPOILER]!? (2024)

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising, in theaters now.

One For All is the ultimate quirk in the world of My Hero Academia -- or, at least, it's the quirk that allows Izuku Midoriya, a boy with no superhuman abilities, to have a chance to accomplish even a fraction of his dreams. The beauty of One For All is that it can be passed down from pupil to pupil, from All Might to Midoriya, allowing others to take hold of the might of this incredible ability.

However, in the series second film, My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising, Midoriya (temporarily) lends One For All to someone very unexpected: Bakugo.

The Fight

During the fight against Nine, an incredibly powerful villain who had, by this point in the film, decimated all of Class 1-A, Midoriya and Bakugo are left broken and beaten under his might. The incredible power conjured up by Nine threatens to obliterate the island they're fighting on due to the massive storms and lightning generated byhis quirk.

In order to save the island -- andbeyond that the world -- Midoriya makes a desperate choice: give Bakugo One For All.Thetwo of themwieldthe power of One For All for a brief time against Nine and overpower him for long enough for Midoriya to unleash one last Final Smash on the villain, sending him plummeting to the bottom of the ocean.

Midoriya's reasoning for giving Bakugo the quirk at all is pretty straightforward: Bakugo learned about One For All in the middle of the third season, after the "Provisional Hero License" arc.Yet, hedecided to keep the secret between himself, All Might and Midoriya. On top of that, if Midoriya didn't double-up the power of One For All, they would be unable to stop Nine from achieving his ends. Therefore, the decision was one simultaneously made out of desperation and faith.

However, in the process, the spark that is One For All leaves Midoriya, leaving him completely powerless, muchlike how All Might lost his abilities following his last battle with All For One.

So That's It?

It mightseem likeBakugo now wields One For All and will take Midoriya's place as the future Symbol of Peace. However, that simply isn't the case. All Might talks to Midoriya afterward and tells him thathe made the right choice and proved himself a great hero. As Midoriya passes out in All Might's arms, One For All returns to Midoriya and leaves Bakugo.

Now, Bakugo didn't surrender One For All. The quirk chose to return to Midoriya. Furthermore, Bakugo wakes up with his arms broken, having no memory of how the fight ended or inheriting One For All. This proves that, while Midoriya can loose One For All, it's unlikely he'll have lost it for all that long when the quirk can choose to return to its rightful master.
