My Hero Academia Teases Deku Has Finally Lost All His Powers (2024)

Warning: Contains spoilers for chapter #417 of My Hero Academia.

Summary

  • Deku loses all of One For All's quirks and the vestiges of the previous users including Daigoro Banjo & Yoichi.
  • Deku is left with raw stockpiled strength, causing uncertainty in the battle against Shigaraki.
  • The transfer has likely destroyed quirk factors for good, ending One For All's legacy in an attempt to save Shigaraki.

Deku's journey in My Hero Academia is quickly nearing a rather controversial conclusion as latest developments tease that Deku may have finally lost all of his powers to Shigaraki. The idea that Deku could lose One For All entirely in bringing down Shigaraki has been slowly but surely becoming a concrete reality ever since Shigaraki began stealing the vestiges of One For All and their quirk factors and the latest chapter teases Deku may have finally lost them all.

In chapter #417 of My Hero Academia, Deku finally breaks through Shigaraki's defenses but loses the remaining vestiges of the previous users of One For All in the process. Only Nana Shimura is left behind and finds herself alone in the barren vestige realm as Shigaraki's hatred for her appears to have prevented her and her quirk factor from transferring.

As Deku and Nana enter the core of Shigaraki's consciousness, they are confronted with the painful memory of a young Tenko being reprimanded by his father, Kotaro. Nana's vestige is also absorbed shortly after she apologizes to Kotaro and Tenko which finally obliterates the "leaden mass" that houses Shigaraki's painful memories. However, Deku may be left virtually powerless as the absence of Yoichi's vestige raises doubts about the future of One For All.

My Hero Academia's latest chapter teases a popular theory about Shigaraki's quirk may be true, hinting his redemption is unavoidable.

Deku Has Lost All of One For All's Quirks

My Hero Academia created by Kohei Horikoshi, chapter #417 "Shimura"

Although it hasn't been long since Deku acquired the quirk factors of the previous users of One For All, the latest chapter suggests Deku may have to bid farewell to these powers for good. The fact that Nana was alone in the vestige realm confirms that all the other vestiges are indeed gone, including Daigoro Banjo, who initially planned to stay with Deku until the end. That said, it is still unclear whether Deku has managed to pass on One For All itself or whether he may still be able to at all now that Yoichi's vestige has also disappeared.

Yoichi's original quirk, Transference, initially fused with the stockpiling quirk that All For One forced on him to create One For All. Thus, his vestige was initially taken to represent not only the Transference quirk but also the power stockpiling quirk. However, chapter #411 clarified that Deku's stockpiled strength was stored in One For All itself rather than the quirk factors. Due to these inconsistencies, it is difficult to say how the absence of Yoichi's vestige might impact Deku or One For All or how much strength he will retain after the fact.

Deku Will Be Left With Raw Stockpiled Strength

The ambiguous state of One For All raises concerns about the future of the battle against Shigaraki, as Deku may be in life-threatening danger if the battle drags on after losing the quirk factors of the previous users. These quirk factors were very much a game-changer and slowly allowed Deku to harness the power of One For All safely, if not mimic it.

While Deku has been working hard to accommodate the overwhelming power of One For All throughout the series, it is still doubtful whether this strength he has accumulated over time will be enough to see the final battle to the end. Deku's raw power may be comparable to All Might's in his prime at best, but even so, losing Gearshift, Fa Jin, and Blackwhip will be a huge handicap in the face of Shigaraki's innumerable quirk factors.

My Hero Academia Brings a Fitting End to One For All's Legacy

Fortunately, as explained in chapter #413, the transfer has likely destroyed the quirk factors for good, ensuring Shigaraki will not be able to use One For All's quirks either. However, this also means that this could be the last that readers see of the previous users of One For All who will likely be destroyed along with their quirk factors. The previous users, if not One For All, have mostly fulfilled their purpose in bringing down All For One at last, and now all that remains is for Deku to save Shigaraki as planned. In fact, there could not be a more fitting way to bring an end to One For All's legacy than by saving someone like Shigaraki who needs it the most.

Either way, the latest chapter signals a bittersweet yet meaningful ending to Deku's long journey in My Hero Academia as Deku finally returns to his tragic, quirkless roots. Sad as it may be to see One For All and the previous users go, the upcoming chapters are sure to be even more emotional as the story finally reaches its long-awaited climax.

In My Hero Academia, some humans have superpowers called quirks. Izuku Midoriya, nicknamed Deku, is not one of them. Deku has always idolized heroes like the number one hero, All Might, and since he was a child, he has always wanted to be a hero. However, his lack of a quirk has always held him back, but a chance encounter with All Might after discovering a classmate in danger sets Deku on the path to becoming a true hero. My Hero Academia centers around Deku and a class of heroes-in-training at UA. This school shapes young quirk users into future heroes through fake rescue missions, combat training, and other hero-tempering tasks. With young Deku inheriting the "One-For-All" quirk, he will learn what it means to be a true hero while facing off with dastardly supervillains.
