Netflix’s new reality competition show Next in Fashion is big. It has big hosts (Tan France and Alexa Chung!), a big cast (18 designers?!) who’ve worked with big names (Beyonce, people), and even a big studio (it’s like a fashion hangar, a hangar of hangers). The debut season also serves big moments and big drama. The moment I’m talking about now comes during Episode 4 (“Streetwear”), so here’s your spoiler alert if you’re not there yet. Look away! Come back later!
Those that have seen Episode 4 know that ithas a moment unlike any I’ve seen before: a guest judge revolts. Seriously, it’s a full-on “I’ve had it officially” moment, but one coming from the other side of the (implied, in this case) judges’ table. Also, this is a moment that wasn’t just included for drama. There was a point made, and it was a point that needed to be made.
The judge in question is Kerby Jean-Raymond, founder of the menswear label Pyer Moss. Jean-Raymond is a politically active designer, one who used his Spring 2016 New York Fashion Week runway show to comment on police brutality and support Black Lives Matter. He’s an advocate and activist, and he put that side of his work to use as a guest judge as well as his fashion sense.
Conflict arose between Jean-Raymond and the other judges (hosts France and Chung, and celebrity stylist Jason Bolden) over the design team of Kiki and Farai. Their streetwear looks—over-sized denim overalls with frills, straps, and embellishments—polarized the judges.
Bolden wasn’t into the proportion on the women’s look. Tan wished it was a bit more streamlined. Jean-Raymond wished they’d paired the dark denim with a different color. All the judges agreed that the looks should’ve had more runway impact and that the details could’ve been handled better. If I’ve learned anything from watching every season of Project Runway on a loop, it’s that TV judges are not kind to unfinished hemlines.
Still, Jean-Raymond was not down on Kiki and Farai enough to send them home. Every time Chung or France or Bolden critiqued them, Jean-Raymond said the same for Claire and Adolfo (the other low-scoring team). Jean-Raymond wasn’t shy about this, either. He stood up for Kiki and Farai’s forward-facing fashion every step of the way, praising their innovation and representation of their culture. After all, Kiki helped launch the womenswear line at FUBU, a fact that clearly (and rightly) impressed Jean-Raymond.
When it came time to reveal the teams up for elimination, Farai seized the chance to speak, and what she said was the most important thing said on Next in Fashion.
“I personally disagree that we’re in the bottom. We were given streetwear and we designed from our perspective. And the thing that I’ve noticed in the fashion industry, it’s mostly one voice that’s heard. The high-end brands and designers are taking ideas from us every single day and it only becomes cool when it’s high-end. For a lot of us minorities, the underprivileged, we want you to see us, but it’s so hard to be seen. It’s really frustrating because I look to designers like Kerby. I look to you, Jason, because you guys are in those spaces.”
That’s when things became real. Jean-Raymond and Bolden felt this moment. You can even stream Bolden dealing with moments just like this in his own Netflix series Styling Hollywood. Bolden’s self-described brand is making Black girl magic happen on red carpets, and Jean-Raymond has had his designs copied by Louis Vuitton. They know what Farai is saying is true. So Farai speaking this truth—the commodification and appropriation of Black designs by high-end, predominantly white labels—to power—the judges holding her chance at a major prize—spoke to them. And it really spoke to Kerby Jean-Raymond.
Noticing his discomfort with what’s about to happen (Farai and Kiki were definitely going home, right?), the judges reconvened on the dais in front of the designers. Jean-Raymond can’t do it, he doesn’t agree with it, and he doesn’t bend: “Ugh, I don’t want to do this, I need to leave the room. I’m not happy about this. I’m really mad.”
Then he leaves the room. Right there. Gone.
This doesn’t happen on reality competition shows. There have been disagreements before, like the highly contentious Project Runway Season 8 finale (Mondo vs. Gretchen). There have even been plenty of double-saves, like Drag Race’s “shantay you both stay” moments, episodes where no one goes home. But it’s rare, possibly unprecedented (I haven’t watched every competition show ever), for a guest judge to full-on leave the set because they disagree with a decision.
Now we know what happens on a competition show when a guest judge exits: it totally halts production. France comes out and tells the designers that the judges are split, they can’t reach a decision, and they’re going to have to sleep on it rather than make the wrong choice. And France, feeling his emotionally honest Queer Eye roots, can’t help but get choked up.
Ultimately, Farai and Kiki stay in the competition along with Claire and Adolfo. No one goes home, and no one went home because Farai spoke up, the judges heard her, and Jean-Raymond refused to budge.
This wasn’t a petty moment, either, or pointless drama. This wasn’t for show. This entire exchange was, in a way, exactly what Next in Fashion should be about. If we’re truly looking to what’s next in fashion, then we need to look at what needs to change in fashion as it exists right now. That’s the point, and this protest helped prove that point.

What happened last season? Seoul-based designer Minju Kim took home the $250,000 prize and launched her collection on Net-A-Porter when the show aired in January 2020, and has since then launched a collaboration with affordable high-street brand & Other Stories.

If you see the blue and green light swirling around the outer edge of the device, Alexa is actively listening. This tech allows the device to analyze your voice and match it to the audio sample it has on file for whatever wake word you've chosen to activate the little bugger.
