New York Fashion Week has the largest number of shows, and, on the whole, is a showcase for a more minimal American aesthetic. Paris, on the other hand, is home to some of the world's largest and more storied brands, from Chanel to Dior to Saint Laurent … and way beyond.

For instance, last year for its Spring-Summer collection 2023, Diesel invited 1,600 students from various colleges and fashion schools to attend the event for free. In total, there were 5,000 attendees — 3,000 of whom were members of the public, which is a big move.

In sheer numbers, New York Fashion Week seems to be the largest event — with almost 300 runway shows or presentations attended by more than 100,000 people, including buyers, press and invited guests.

While most of the runway shows for major brands, like Coach and Michael Kors, are by invitation-only for editors, buyers, stylists and other fashion industry players, there are still ways for the general public who are interested in fashion to attend and participate in New York Fashion Week.

The world's biggest fashion brands attend this event, such as Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Diane Von Furstenberg, Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, Brooks Brothers, Alexander Wang, and many more. NYC Fashion Week started in the early 1940s and was the pioneer of fashion events worldwide.

It has to be Paris. Fashion week in Paris is one of the most anticipated and attended compared to fashion weeks held in other cities. It hosts over 100 designers and designer brands every year, and not all of them are even based in Paris.

1. Designers pay celebrities to attend their shows. Celebrities mean press coverage, which is hard to get when dozens of fashion shows happen every day during fashion week. The bigger the celebrity, the more they cost and the greater the buzz around them and the show.

A fashion show is a public event, often with tickets sold to the general public. However, the real money comes from corporate sponsorships. Large companies will pay to have their name associated with the event, and will also provide clothing and other materials for the show.

For celebrities who are household names, but not as high-wattage as the A-listers, there's still a decent buck to be made to sit front row, to the tune of anywhere from $40,000 to $60,000. The fee for huge A-list names to sit front row drops dramatically if those celebrities decide to attend more than one show.

NYFW includes two types of shows: Industry and open-to-the-public shows. Unless you're a buyer or work in press, it is unlikely that you'll be able to snag a seat to the heavy hitters. However, you can nab tickets to the public shows here.
