Can regular people go to NYFW? ›

NYFW includes two types of shows: Industry and open-to-the-public shows. Unless you're a buyer or work in press, it is unlikely that you'll be able to snag a seat to the heavy hitters. However, you can find info on public shows here.

Don't be Pushy: Fashion events, especially the ones open to the public, can get very crowded, but pushing and shoving to secure a better view is a major faux pas. Maintain your composure, be patient, and respect the personal space of those around you.

Each show aims for 45 minutes in length, and will not exceed 1.5 hours. What to wear? We highly recommend dressing to impress, and very fashion forward as cameras are everywhere.

New York Fashion Week brings in people from all over the world–from models and celebrities to those just looking to get a sneak peak at the latest designer trends–and the city becomes filled with designer pop-ups, store events, and tons of photographers snapping photos of NYC's iconic street fashion.

The total bill for one show during New York Fashion Week will be about $200,000. The cost includes: rental of space at Lincoln Center - from $15,000 to $60,000, styling - approximately $8,000 for the day, PR - from $5,000 to $15,000, production - from $10,000 to $20,000, models - approximately $150 to $200 each.

I insist on the word “some” as many fashion shows are by invitation only. So sometimes even money can't buy you an entrance to see shows of the biggest brands. However, you can find paid events open to the public online. For example, The Vogue World event last September was a runway show open to the public.

What Is the Five Outfit Rule? Per Barber, the five outfit rule goes like this: If you're going to buy something, it has to go with five things you already own. If it doesn't, you need to leave it behind. Overconsumption is a global issue that can impact your mental health more than you realize.

A tailored pair of dark wash denim is always a safe bet, too. Further, Who What Wear suggests, “Unless [you're dressing for a] formal event, keep a casual feel to your look.

"All the garments [are put] back in order, the accessories [are put] back to [into] their boxes... Then we have to take the [whole] collection back to the showroom, because we usually start market the next morning. We have to bring everything from boards to garment racks to boxes back to the studio."

What is NYFW dress code? ›

The best thing about NYFW is that there's not a dress code.

If you have the money or an investor then showcase at NYFW. It's great for exposure and to get on the radar of buyers, magazines, and celebrity stylists. It will increase your credibility and legitimize your business in the fashion world. But please make sure that you are on the official NYFW schedule.

Transparently, I have never been paid “to attend NYFW”.

The Polo Bar. The Polo Bar has been a hot spot since it opened in 2015, and it's still just as star-studded and difficult get into. Once you secure a reservation at this Instagrammable destination, expect to see A-listers aplenty, especially during fashion week.

How do I get there? NYFW Backstage is located at 21 Greene. Guests are encouraged to attend via public transport by subway or bus or drop off via car service or taxi. NYFW does not offer parking.

While most of the runway shows for major brands, like Coach and Michael Kors, are by invitation-only for editors, buyers, stylists and other fashion industry players, there are still ways for the general public who are interested in fashion to attend and participate in New York Fashion Week.

Fashion shows are invitation only events, and invitations that are highly sought after. It's extremely difficult for someone without connections to get tickets to even secondary shows (I know because I have been to some).

Is it hard to get in NYFW? ›

Like I said in the beginning unless you're a top-tier blogger or a magazine editor, chances are you're going to have to request tickets to get invites to shows. Now, some shows do their NYFW ticket requests in-house (i.e themselves) and some brands hire PR agencies to manage their attendee list for NYFW.

All of NYFW is by invitation or accreditation only. You'll have to contact the PR agencies, tell them what kind of work you do in the industry, and ask for a pass. Keep it friendly and professional, and don't take it personally if you don't get into a show, don't even respond other than a thank you.
