Just some of the celebrities who have called the following ten NYC buildings home
From Future New York NYC's Top 10 Most Popular Buildings for Celebrities
By CityRealty StaffFriday, April 23, 2021
Some celebrities choose to make their homes in New York for the sake of proximity to Broadway theaters and TV production studios. Others appreciate the privacy the city offers - no maps of stars' homes here! And still others come to New York for the same reason their less famous counterparts do: they appreciate the rich architecture, multitude of cultural opportunities, endless shopping and culinary options, and overall feeling of living at the center of the universe.
Whatever the reason, certain buildings have proven especially popular among celebrities of all stripes. The most frequent choice, Hotel Chelsea, is currently being transformed into a luxury hotel, a far cry from its bohemian history. However, residents of the following condos and co-ops have the best chance of having a home with a star-studded history, a celebrity neighbor, or sometimes both at once.

When this dramatic cooperative was built at the end of the 19th century, it got its name from a remark that it was so far removed from downtown residential areas that it might as well be in the Dakota territory. The Upper West Side has become significantly more built up since then, but the foreboding Gothic architecture, discreet doorman, and discerning board have a way of offering the privacy celebrities crave. Its expansive apartments, Central Park views, and rich history also serve to announce that one has truly made it in New York. Its counts among its most famous residents John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Judy Garland, Roberta Flack, Madonna, Leonard Bernstein, Rudolf Nureyev, and Gilda Radner - to name just a few!

"It was one of those remarkable apartments...a window on every side, everything was wide open." So said Diane Keaton of her first New York apartment in the Emery Roth-designed San Remo, a New York City landmark and, with its twin-towered structure, one of the most easily recognized buildings along Central Park West. Demi Moore spoke in similarly rapturous tones: "The location, history, and architecture of the San Remo were on a completely different level." The Real Deal notes that current owners are more likely to be "titans of industry these days than stars of the silver screen," but it has also counted Glenn Close, Mary Tyler Moore, Bruce Willis, Steve Martin, and Barry Manilow as residents.

15 Central Park West has only been open for 12 years, but this Robert A.M. Stern-designed condominium has already become one of the most highly coveted buildings on Central Park. Its limestone facade nods to the grand prewar co-ops of the past, while the interiors and amenities offer everything the modern condo buyer could possibly want. The building's private courtyard also acts as a motor court that allows the most famous residents to get in and out of the building with zero fuss, and only a small handful of apartments per floor allows for optimal privacy. Moreover, in addition to the fitness center and lounge that have become de rigeur in luxury buildings, a residents-only restaurant is the ideal place to celebrate holidays or watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. Past and present residents like Denzel Washington, Sting, Robert de Niro, and Elie Tahari can attest to that.

Architecture critic Carter Horsley describes The Beresford, an Emery Roth design, as "one of the world's greatest residential buildings" for grand apartments and magnificent, three-towered design that artfully hides the building's water tanks. With easy access to Central Park, the American Museum of Natural History, and Theodore Roosevelt Park, it also boasts one of the greatest locations on the Upper West Side. The grand apartments are still rich in prewar details, but the building and amenities have been adjusted to reflect the needs of contemporary buyers. Helen Gurley Brown, Diane Sawyer, Isaac Stern, and Jerry Seinfeld have both been drawn to its rich history and further burnished it.

While the building's reputation has taken a significant hit in recent years, there was nevertheless a time when Trump Tower signified a new era for Fifth Avenue and New York itself. Following the purchase of Tiffany & Co.'s air rights, the Trump Organization erected was New York's tallest all-glass structure at the time of its completion in 1983. The building is fully staffed and rich in hotel-style amenities, but the greatest asset of all is its location near Central Park, Bergdorf Goodman, and the best shopping on Fifth and Madison Avenues. Past residents have included Dick Clark, Johnny Carson, and Sophia Loren; more recently, actor Vincent Gallo made an all-cash purchase on a high-floor home.

The Pierre has long enjoyed a reputation as one of the most prestigious hotels on Fifth Avenue, and 15 furnished apartments on top now allow some to turn a temporary visit into a more permanent home during an extended stay in New York. Residents have access to the same bespoke service and amenities that guests enjoy, not to mention Central Park, Museum Mile, and premier designer shopping. Impresarios like Mohamed al-Fayed, Sumner Redstone, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, and Richard Rodgers have made it their New York home away from home.

The far west side of Midtown has seen an incredible wave of high-rise, amenity-rich development in recent years, and Atelier led the charge in 2007. Every apartment features high ceilings, open layout, gourmet kitchen, and spectacular views of the Hudson River, the iconic Midtown skyline, and the newly risen Hudson Yards. It is conveniently located in the center of Manhattan with easy access to entertainment and transportation. However, with a state-of-the-art health club, sports courts, screening room, lounge, children's playroom, sky lounge, and exclusive programs among the array of amenities, one hardly needs to leave the building at all. Celebrities like Brendan Fraser, Mekhi Phifer, Lindsay Lohan, and James Blake have appreciated the privacy and luxury this building has to offer.

Before it was converted to condos in 2005, Barbizon/63 was known as the Barbizon Hotel for Women. Men were not allowed above the lobby, and it offered women a safe place to live. The building is now on the National Register of Historic Places, and past residents like Sylvia Plath, Grace Kelly, Liza Minelli, Candace Bergen, and Ali McGraw add to its allure. The original Barbizon pool has been restored and incorporated into the building's Equinox gym, to which residents have a private entrance, and additional amenities include a club salon with living room, a party room with catering kitchen, and an industrial laundry room. Moreover, residents are automatically enrolled in the private shopping service at the nearby Bergdorf Goodman.

In the present day, Hotel des Artistes is a designated New York City landmark, on the National Register of Historic Places, and one of the most highly coveted buildings on the Upper West Side. But when this Gothic structure was built on "Artists Row" in 1917, it was designed as an artists' cooperative. Its most famous residents include Isadora Duncan, Noel Coward, Norman Rockwell, and Howard Chandler Christy, artist of the murals in Cafe des Artistes, the building's world-famous restaurant where residents get special discounts. This white-glove building also offers two workout rooms, a squash court, and an indoor pool.

The Waldorf Astoria hotel has been converted to a mixed-use building with 350 hotel rooms spread across eight floors and 375 apartments on 33 floors. All of it the work on the Art Deco building's exterior and interiors is being done within the confines of the restrictions from Landmarks and with respect to the hotel's esteemed history. Presidents and heads of state from all over the world have visited on stays in New York, and entertainment royalty like Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, Cole Porter (who gave it a shout-out in "You're the Top"), and Frank Sinatra have made it their New York home base.
