Our History - Alta Dena® Dairy (2024)

Our History

Alta Dena® Dairy has been providing families with delicious, fresh dairy since 1945. It’s more than a job, it’s a way of life. Today we’re led by farmers who care for their cows, their land, their neighbors and their communities. It’s a simple, time-honored recipe we like to call the Alta Dena Difference.

It all started in Monrovia, California by three brothers, Elmer, Edgar and Harold Stueve. With little more than 61 cows and a delivery wagon, they set out to nourish their neighbors with tasty, nutritious milk from cows soaking up the fresh, California sunshine.

From day one, the brothers were committed to the highest standards of dairy processing. And families could sure taste the difference. In 1953, Alta Dena would grow into the largest dairy in California and one of the largest in the world, but it never lost its family values – at one point over 70 members of the founding Stueve brothers’ family worked there!

Over the years we’ve added more exciting products, but one thing remains the same – they’re all crafted with the same farm-family values that have made us a favorite Southern California dairy.

Today, Alta Dena is 100% owned by a dairy farm cooperative that includes family farms right in our community. Farmers who believe the care and pride that go into dairy production really matter. And after 75 years, you can still taste the pride in every delicious glass.
