Packs/Shoulder Bags for NYC- Consensus?
My wife and I will be in Manhattan doing some walking in July. We do have to take the LIRR to Penn Station and then the subway to various locations from there. I have been reading several posts about this issue, but it is hard to come to any consensus as to what type of 'bag' we should have with us. Here are my questions:
1. If we have a small travel bag that is on your back, how can you prevent things from being stolen out of it? Should you lock it?
2. Should we place our passports/credit cards in our pants/short pockets as opposed to the bag?
What do you think about these possible shoulder bags? Can they also function as a 'man bag'?

If it doesn't fit in your pockets (male) or purse (female), you don't need it.
New York is a city, for heaven's sake, not the wilderness. If you need food/water/aspirin/whatever, there are about a zillion places to get it.

The idea was to have a bag to carry some things you might want to buy along the way (ie souvenirs). Are you suggesting that credit cards, cash etc should be in your pockets instead of a travel bag?

A: I walk around NY with my wallet in my back pocket and often carry a small bookbag on my back with snacks & water for the family. I have no concerns about anything being stolen. This is NYC, not some crime ridden pickpocket haven.

I carry cash/credit cards etc in my wallet in my pocket, and my girlfriend carries all that stuff in her purse.
Crime is very low in Manhattan, but a tourist's carry-all is certainly more of a target for thieves than your pocket.

Passports should really be left in a safe deposit box in your hotel, assuming you have some other sort of gov't photo ID like a drivers license.
I carry my house keys on my person (front pants pocket) along with a few dollars so I don't have to pull out my wallet for a drink, or something other small purchase. Everything else is in my purse, carried on my shoulder.
NYC as others have mentioned is a very safe city, but don't put "important" things in a bag you carry behind you.If you;re thinking of putting a lock on your bag, then you shouldn;t be using that kind of a bag or putting valuables in it. A messenger over the shoulder bag that you carry in front is better

I understand your concern--we were nervous before our vacation as well.
Here's what we did:
- my husband carried his wallet in his back pocket, always aware of his surroundings, etc, but felt comfortable the whole time.
- I had a purse that I carried some of the time and then for longer outtings (when I wanted my camera, water, etc.) I brought w/ a small bag/backpack (it could be carried over the shoulder or on my back). Again, we were aware of crowds, etc... but really felt safe.
Don't carry your passport w/ you--lock it up in your hotel safe. We separated our credit cards only taking one w/ and leaving one in the safe just in case.
The bag in your attachment looks perfect--or you could go to a local travel store.
Good luck and have fun

I went to NYC with friends who go there often - their advice was to take a shoulder bag that zips completely and just hang on to it. We all had our wallets in our bags with cash and cards. I had a small messenger bag and it worked great.
If you have a backpack style bag, then in crowded places, I would slip it onto 1 shoulder and bring it around sort of in front of me so that I could keep an eye and hand on the bag. And with any bag, I wouldn't put anything of value in an easily-accessibly exterior pocket. That way if someone does unzip a pocket, they get gum and lipbalm rather than your wallet.
