Does PepsiCo own Sunkist? ›

Sunkist was was launched in 1979 originally manufactured under license by the Sunkist Growers Association to a leading Pepsi bottling company. However, in 1986 the production was taken over by Cadbury Schweppes beverages which was later merged with Dr. Pepper/Snapple where Sunkist resides today.

It started in 1893 under the name: Southern California Fruit Exchange in Claremont, California by P.J. Dreher and his son, Edward Dreher. In 1905, it was renamed the California Fruit Growers Exchange as it represented 45% of the California citrus industry. Finally, in 1952 its named was changed to Sunkist Growers, Inc.

There's actually an I in Sunkist. So it's Sunkist. That's right.

If you are spoilt for choice between Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Dr Pepper, Mountain Dew, Sprite, Fanta, Sunkist, and 7-Up, think again. The reality is that these soft drinks are all owned by just three companies, namely the Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo, Inc., and Keurig Dr Pepper, Inc.

In 1984, Sunkist Soft Drinks was acquired by Del Monte, and production responsibilities were then assumed by Cadbury Schweppes until 2008. Currently, Sunkist is produced by Keurig Dr Pepper in the United States and maintains its position as the most popular orange soda in the country.

It also launched the Sunkist brand: the ad agency Lord & Thomas originally proposed using the adjective "sun-kissed" to describe the CFGE oranges; the word eventually used in the campaign was Sunkist, made up by the agency so it would be easier to defend afterwards as a trademark.

It originally represented only growers of oranges: in 1896 lemon growers joined as well. By 1905, the group represented 5,000 members, 45% of the California citrus industry, and renamed itself the California Fruit Growers Exchange. In 1952, it changed its name to Sunkist Growers, Inc.

So when you see “Sunkist” on the label, you know it comes with the same quality as each and every citrus variety our cooperative grows.
