PETA slams H&M, here’s WHY (2024)

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals(PETA) has recently made allegations of animal cruelty against the clothing brand H&M. An American animal rights NGO has slammed the clothing brand for selling mohair.

Mohair is a long and smooth fiber that is made from the hair of the Angora goat. Mohair is used to make suits, winter coats, sweaters, and home furnishings.

PETA Director of Corporate Projects Yvonne Taylor said baby goats were left screaming in pain and fear on the shearing floor, all for mohair jumpers and scarves.

In 2018, H&M banned mohair from its collections across its chains after PETA showed a clip where goats were being mistreated as they were shorn. But recently, PETA shared a photo on its Instagram page that claims H&M still uses mohair and asked people to not buy those products from H&M.

H&M is yet to speak on this matter.

In the caption, PETA also urged people to visit H&M’s page and tell the company to do the right thing by only using vegan materials!

People were quick to react and flooded the comment section with their disappointment for the brand.

One of the users wrote, Everyone can do without this and shame on companies making money out of misery. Keep shouting it out and hopefully, people will start to listen and importantly act.

Another wrote, It’s 2022 no company needs to make money on the blanket of misery and torture. A third user wrote, Huh? Really?@hmnever going to that shop again.

When in 2018, PETA shared the video of how mohair products are made, several clothing brands, including Zara, and H&M joined in for a permanent mohair ban. H&M even stated that H&M group has an Animal Welfare Policy with strict requirements for all animal-deriving materials that we use in our products.
