Pololine | Decoding the Dress Code: “Casual Elegant” (2024)

A great season is arriving, Spring is already here and Summer well, around the corner in ablink! which it means a season full of events, and most of them alfresco – which I love.

It might be stressful to receive an invitation indicating certain Protocol / Dress Code as“elegant”, “elegant sport”, “casual elegant”, “co*cktail”, “white tie”, etc. The fact is thatdepending on the person, the meaning of “sport” or “elegant” may change.

Let’s get it right, how does The Cambridge Dictionary defines Protocol? “the system of rulesand acceptable behaviour used at official ceremonies and occasions”A Dress Code refers as well to indicate the type of clothing by a series of rules that a groupof people should wear according to specific circ*mstances.

My main advice for any type of Dress Code is: always use colours that give natural andyouthful light to your complexion. It is of vital importance to choose the best shape andlength of the garments for you because what might be fashionable, might not look the mostflattering on you according to your height, personality or the impression that you want togive.

This time I’m going to talk about the most well-known Dress Code for daytime and/ oralfresco: “Casual Elegant”.
The Casual Elegant dress code, is NOT “casual sport” which could include jeans andsandals, the word “elegant” should be taken as it is, because although this kind of elegancerequires being natural and comfortable -casual-, the combination of fabrics and shapes willbe the key at the time of achieving an accurate outfit.

It is important to maintain your own style and essence, and feel yourself properly dressedwithout feeling “a character” that you are not, this gives a plus of style and personality.

Jeans do not count as an option in this category. If you choose to wear pants, the bestoption are formal trousers suit, with a loose fit and a fabric that doesn’t make a crease at thefirst movement.

Skirts or dresses: elegant, good looking and quality fabrics should be above all. The mostconvenient lengths are: by the knee or a few centimetres above if it is a co*cktail, below theknee a midi length (personally it is what I like the most when I attend to this type of events),and in the case of an event at evening, it could be a long length.

Colours and patterns in light and bight shades during the day, as the darker palettes, willlook more sophisticated towards sunset/evening. For example, a crêpe pencil skirt in white,at daytime would look amazing with a silk shirt in pastel shades and statement earrings, butfor an evening event, the same skirt would be more appropriate with a sequin top in black orwine or dark blue with a pair of some more discreet earrings.

Shoes: wearing stilettos or classic sandals depending on the season and the outfit that hasbeen chosen, is the easy way. But if you want to go a step further, the shoes can becomethe star of the outfit if they are statements, in a vibrant colour or with an original detail.

To elongate the legs, the pointed shoes or the nude colour on stilettos and sandals (the mostsimilar colour possible to your own skin tone) are the appropriate ones to create that opticalillusion of length.

I strongly suggest avoiding platforms and wedged shoes. Lean by thin high heels or mediumheight that are also very fashionable. The “flat” options that I like the most for this type ofoutfits are the mules, which come in a great variety of models and heights. I tend not to useballerinas for these occasions.

Different print patterns it can be combined with others (a trend that is here to stay), but theyshould always be matched strategically, having a coherence in the range of colours-palettesto make it seems nice to the eye.

Here are some pictures of my favourite example of “Casual Elegant”.

I hope this gives you a bit of help and inspiration!

Certainly! It sounds like the article touches upon dress codes, fashion tips, and nuances associated with different attire etiquettes for various occasions. Let's break down the concepts mentioned:

Dress Codes:

  1. Protocol: It refers to the system of rules and acceptable behavior used at official ceremonies and occasions. It governs conduct and practices during formal events.
  2. Dress Code: This indicates a specific set of clothing rules tailored for particular circ*mstances or events. It guides people on what to wear based on the occasion's nature.

Dress Code Specifics:

  1. Casual Elegant: This dress code emphasizes a blend of casual comfort with an elegant touch. It's not as relaxed as "casual sport" and demands a natural yet refined appearance.

Clothing Guidelines for Casual Elegant:

  1. Attire for Men and Women:

    • Men: Formal trousers with a loose fit, avoiding jeans. Likely options are formal suits with fabrics that don’t crease easily.
    • Women: Skirts or dresses with quality fabrics and elegant cuts, preferably knee-length or slightly above for daytime. Midi or longer lengths could be suitable for evening events.
  2. Color and Fabric Choices:

    • Light and bright shades during the day, transitioning to darker palettes toward evening events.
    • Fabrics play a crucial role, with elegant materials for skirts or dresses to suit the time of day and the event's formality.
  3. Accessories and Shoes:

    • Shoes like stilettos or classic sandals are recommended, but statement shoes can elevate the outfit. Pointed or nude-colored shoes create an illusion of longer legs.
    • Avoidance of platforms and wedges; preference for thin high heels or medium-height shoes.
    • Strategic matching of print patterns and coherent color palettes are suggested for a cohesive look.

Personal Style and Essence:

  • Emphasis on maintaining personal style while adhering to the dress code, allowing individuals to feel appropriately dressed without losing their unique identity.

Additional Suggestions:

  • Guidance on combining different print patterns strategically.
  • Highlighting specific accessories and their potential to enhance an outfit.
